Hi all,
my wife and i are in the process of emmigrating to Canada, been there a number of times with the army so i’m fairly switched on with the way things are over there.
Just wondered what an average long haul run is, i know you work the seven and fourteen day cycle but what would be a ten/twelve day run into the states.
Going over next month( my wifes first visit) for a two week break, any help you can give will be appreciated.
Thanks all
though i am not doing that kind of distance i speak to plenty of guys who do and one run might be from east to west canada then south down to california then back over to east canada or could ba vice versa depending where your home terminal is. or you might be in a job where you are home at the weekends or even through the week, look around and not at the first job that comes your way.
what part of canada are you visiting?
steve.
Hi steve,
thanks for the info, we’re flying into Calgary then doing the rockies, Banff, Jasper then over to Edmonton and finally south finishing in Calgary.
Get to a hockey game if you can
calgary a nice city spent some time there when i 1st came over. found it expensive for property but as a truck driver it doesnt matter where you live.
from winnipeg you could do florida or southern california and back in less than 14 days. basically stick to 70 in 8 days us rules and have 36hrs off after 14 days (canada rules). i get the monthly miles in less than 4 weeks then have a few days off and it works for me. but im single and usually dont remember the time off coz good beer ere.
Good beer in Canada, you must be joking!!! Last run I did was 17 days out, Portage to Lake Louise 3 1/2 day wait Leathbridge…Leathbridge to Laredo, TX 2 day wait, Laredo to Toronto 2 days off and 1 day wait Trentam On to Prortage.

Is’nt that what long haul driving is all about, this is north america where long hall and delays are the norm, you can get the same delays in europe doing uk - italy etc,and going back to when we crossed the borders how many days were we parked up then. if anyone can’t see unforseen delays then they are in the wrong job. In long haul if you are told the run will take 7 days then expect 10 if you are told 10 then expect 14, if you can’t then work for tesco driving the shopping trolleys for 8 hours a day.
steve.
I don’t understand your tone Steve, He asked what a typical run was like and I told him what my last run was, I wasn’t complaining, just being informative. and I I have done Italy /Spain, and so on going back to the 70’s so I don’t know why you tried to put me down for it.

Canuck drivers might perhaps be forgiven for being a bit tetchy after all the flack they’ve had lately, I know you weren’t moaning and am sure your insight will be of use to the original poster.

sorry dieseldog, does look like i took a bad tone to you, no harm meant and hope you accept my apology, just that so many others are trying to put the job down over here and i got you wrong, once again i apologise.
steve.
Ok Steve no worries
Teabreak,
cheers, thats the kind of info i’m after, how long away, possible distance and time off. Any more information that would help my wife and i settle in canada would be gratefully appreciated.

Oh well back to a real truck drivers forum … bye all
sandman - i was haulin glass for big freight so a typical run would be -
winnipeg to kansas then load glass to anywhere from quebec to british colombia then usually back to kansas and do it again. my monthly milage was about 10000 miles a month and i didnt run silly to do that.
Thanks teabbreak,
we leave tomorrow(15 mar) for two weeks in Canada, let you know how we get on.
