won’t do anything to increase your chances of getting a decent job within the HGV industry.

I wouldn’t be too sure!

I phones a low-loader company about a year ago. Explained my [low loader] experience and other industry related qualifications (managed to get quite a few through work over the years) and his reply was “Wow! That’s quite impressive! Have you got your Driver CPC?” When I told him I hadn’t (at that time) he siad to call him back when I had!!! :open_mouth:

That’s rubbish. You haven’t got one for a good reason. You don’t need one till 2014. The only thing I can think of is the Insurance might be cheaper for drivers with CPC.

Or
The Company is too tight to pay for their Drivers and so expect it payed by you before employing :imp:

Someone should keep the results of this poll and then compare it to a new one in 2014, I think the over 50 range might drop dramatically :unamused:

That was exactly the reason and I was under no illusions otherwise!

In T&D this month it has a bit about a girl who is 19 and drives a tipper for her dad’s company.

Is she in 3D?

No that’s Fiona in the Sunday Sport
I’m 31 I think I’m the youngest but one on a firm of 32 drivers. We’ve got about 6 drivers due to retire in the next 3 years and I’ve been with the firm
12 years February- almost 10 on the road.

I’m 22 held my licenses just over a year, was driving rigids shortly after I passed and done the odd artic run here and there but took a chance in leaving a full time job to get experience on different types of trailers and areas of the country. Now on artics for agency getting work 5-6 days a week. The youngest driver I’ve met was 24, but most of the drivers I see I would say are 30 onwards. It’s not nice for example this week my start times were 12 midday and I worked Saturday aswell so when my mates were out Friday and Saturday night I was on the road, but there is no other job I would rather be doing.

This poll will be skewed though because statistically it will be younger people using t’internet I would have thought.

i am absolutely astonished y the percentage of younger people.now are all these working/using their hgv or are they licence holders looking for work???either way the future of the industry looks good because if younger licence holders are on here it generally means they take their job seriously which cant be a bad thing in my opinion…im in the 30-35 bracket and have held my licence for just over 2 years and been using that long aswell.

Yes, I was thinking pretty much the same.

I’m 51, I started when I was 26 and it was typical then for the majority of drivers to be in their 20s/30s, it seems that we all grew older together without anyone else coming into the game so I have always been fairly average in age.

The whole “2 years experience” trap is going to have to go at some point and sooner rather than later. The average age on the whole is quite high and in 2014 a lot of the older drivers are going to jack it in because of the CPC nonsense.

This is going to create a serious amount of vacancies and firms will have to start giving inexperienced drivers a chance. I signed on about a month ago and had to sit in on a class designed to help people back to work. They said the 3 main jobs available at the moment were security, care work and HGV. More jobs than people. I went to Best Connection down the road and asked if this was true and he agreed, especially for the more specialist work such as ADR and HIAB, really struggling to fill the positions he said. I don’t think they’re liars either as about 3 years ago they wouldn’t even give me a van driving job because I’d never driven one, drivers were ten a penny and they could pick and choose.

Drivers are leaving the industry and they’re not being replaced. New drivers are put off by the high cost and 2 years experience trap. Something has to give somewhere.
