Maybe you can get a job like John. He is retired but the job he has consists of a very good salary & all he has to do is whenever the BBC needs an opinion on the subject of English Lit they phone him for a short interview for which he gets paid -& that’s it. He also gets a v.generous pension on top.
Christmas greetings to everyone and their families, have a good’un, and wishing everyone a great new year. Regards Fred
i put a post here in October saying id met Jock Newman, think his nickname was the yellow peril, apparently he didnt used to hang about, he was a little Scottish bloke, he said he worked for Astrans, drove Scanias and a Transcon, im just wondering if anyone read my original post or not, the things the bloke was saying he sounded genuine, had some great stories, if he was pukka, surely someone here would know him?
The name dont ring a bell sorry, was he a subbie ,and when was it.
Roger
he said he was on direct, i think the Transcon was quite new when he got it,
Sorry mate thats a no no Astran never had any Transcons, there were a few subbies with Trannies, the main one was Bob Headley who lives not far from me ,think he may have been telling u a story ,very easy to do if you meet up with a ME driver on a ferry or in a Truckstop .tells u a story and then it gets blown out of all proportion ,Asian transport and Astran ran Scania, leyland,(early days) and Mercs.if your not sure who I am checkout the Longhaul Pioneers Book by Asley Coghill,Name Roger Haywood.or purchase the book if you hvnt read it ,worth every penny then it will put you straight about Astran
cheers Roger
cheers mate, he did say he was in either the book or the video, cant remember which…
merry christmas everybody!!
Happy Christmas Gentlemen. Lovely thread this, you can go up and down the pages and almost always find something of interest. As we should all have a bit of time to ourselves, (ho, ho), could I perhaps point the afficianadoes in the direction of a period French offering on the Middle East , “Les Hommes de Rose”, it must be somewhere on the internet, or the You thingy. Produced by, I think Maurice Cloche, (had some good stuff to his credit), with music by Jo Moulet, which aint bad. Some cracking camera work, and clear shots of a lot of places that for many are just names. The “real” M/E men will pick out the non genuine bits, but from memory it was a good record of the period, and created quite a following in France, coming out at the time of the Max Meynier phenomenen, when France learned the vital nature of road transport to its economic well being, and its social fabric. Shame nothing similar ever happened here! Joyeux Noel, Cheerio for now.
Merry Christmas Lads
