You’ve no need to talk about people spilling diesel crow,I seem to remember you doing the very same thing in broad daylight on a service area near Turin in Italy, when you over revved the air valve on your belly tank full of red and flooded the car park.I recall we had to make a pretty sharp exit.Oh, and incidentally have you never heard of punctuation when writing about your memoirs.Your brain’s working faster than your fingers or you’ve drank too much San Miguel

it wasn’t my photograph Geoff, it was posted on here earlier in the thread, but is Ken the the bloke who lived near Burton on Trent.
I often wonder how much vin rouge has ended up in the Rhine or the Danube though
Ken used to live in the Manchester area, although the years we are talking about are a long time ago!

Tony Taylor:
Just for you Geoff, three of our trucks on the French side of the Mont Blanc Tunnel,The little girl is our Julie, she’s a big girl now, don’t time fly by, she’s 40 this year. The drivers are Pete Hollic and Tony Bowden. The other is your pride and joy the new 4006.
I can not understand this. There’s a truck from Rossendale, and another from Ramsbottom some where. Yet I never knew them.
But I lived at the time in Bacup, in Rossendale!! Maybe because I was always to busy, that I did not notice them.
In 5 years, I did 25 trips to the ME, but mostly I worked internally in Saudi. 1976/ 81.
Truck was a blue Daff, eventually painted up. Hall To Arabia. Mind I did keep a bit to my self, most of the time.
Hib you wouldn t have seen them in Rossendale I lived in Rawtenstall but none of our trucks were based there . For most of the time we operated out of Trafford Park which e4xplains the 872 number you can see on the Scania later we changed the name to Taylor Bros Rossendale number then 0706 now 01706. Hope this clears things up for you. Incidentally I knew Jimmy Kent who lived up your way and worked for Bowkers. regards Crow.
Well, I can not remember any ones names, except Trevor, who went out with Michel Whittles secretary, Penny. They were in Abbey village, near Bolton.
I remember going down to Bacup, to pick up my truck, to take it for new tyres.
There was a whole heard of police men round her. I thought Oh sh*t. The spare was trailing yards of rubber behind and the road tyres were not much better. The split mudguards, making them totally visible.
Anyway, they were just interested in where I’d been, and said nothing about the tyres.
There were actually, articles in the Rossendale Free Press, about my trips.
From The Long Haul Pioneers-book, ■■■■’s diary. 27.12.68 (page 265). 07.00 Checked oil, water and tyres and dropped radiator fan.
What does dropping radiator fan mean?

I would imagine that it is a slight error of text and should be “locked” the radiator fan ■■
On most viscous fans there were to be found locking devices, normally two sliding dogs which kept the fan engaged at all times, so the cooling effect would be at maximum. Behr made fans had a spring loaded locking pin which was engaged by turning the locking ring around the pin by a quarter turn.
That is my take on the about quote anyways.
Just to prove that i talk complete ■■■■■■■■, i have just looked at the said page in Ashe’s book, and the truck was knee deep in snow at the time of the incident, so what i have stated above, although true, would not apply to the situation present at the time !!!
Maybe he actually took the fan off, so as to get a bit more heating out of the heater ■■

That’s what I was thinking. I remember my father telling me that early 110 Scanias had fixed fan and they were running too cold, but I have never heard someone taking the fan off. Until I read the book, if that’s what it means. A good idea though.
That’s about the only thing it can be i think,at Wyatt’s a lot of the drivers used to live out of the area and as result when spending a night in the yard would pull up the rad blind when they parked up in the early hours to try and keep the heat in the cab,Mr Wyatt took exception to this as he thought they had been running with the blind up too , and as this was after a disasterous period of engine over heating with the old AEC’s he drove round the yard early one morning and saw a couple of lorries with the blinds up and ordered the fitters to take them all off!
