As good as it gets?

Backload from brick works Skelmersdale (I think), “sorry drive we,ve only got 8 packs but the lads are doing as we speak, be about 2 hrs if you want to wait”
No prob sun were shining I were well in hand got a cuppa n sat on cab roof n chilled. A local 4 whlr pulled in, 5 mins later forklift driver says he,s going to take 4 packs off mine for the local guy, " No your bludy well not take the bludy lot off" n back home I went empty. 5 days later I got a fiver from brick yard manager, fair play to him. That was the only time EVER in 2 yrs on brick lorries that I got messed about, loading or offloading.Netting up n on the crane could be a bit miserable some times n a bit ■■■■■■ on sites. However got to go all over the country not too many repetitive jobs n Sat morns usually private jobs with generally a tip at the end.Akky Defender ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ never let me down n were a looker. When I read some of the antics you guys had to put up with were the bricks as good as it got ?

Tried about every aspect of driving , but the brick and block job will always be my favourite . I always enjoyed the skill of using a crane properly . It could be miserable netting up in the rain and snow , but better than sheeting and roping a flat . A lot of freedom with the job , plonk them down and clear off most of the time , and if the site foremen were awkward put the packs where the forkie couldn’t reach them , they suddenly became more obliging . We did a lot of private house jobs with the 8 wheelers and there were usually tips if you did a good job . far the best job in transport . Dave

PACKS!! !!PACKS, WHAT ON EARTH OUR YOU ON ABOUT… bricks were made for handball… yes! load yourself .no gloves , bricks still warm, all the dust any man could want for 3 hours…then try and turn round with one side loaded [in a brick works] that is why RAVES were put on trailers so the first row leaned in then you went higher ,about 3and half thousand around 15 tons ,then you had the absolute delight to get on to a site and get told [some one will be over as soon as possible to help you unload] once you had done one side !!then turn around again probably back out on the road ,lob sided,on your own, hoping
the bricks dont come off, or turn the trailer over ,then it could be raining, also no where to wash up…that was Bricks.

THAT WAS A BRICK SUBBIES DAILY WORK 5 DAYS ,IF YOU DID NOT LIKE IT MOVE ON -WHERE TO… ANOTHER SUBBIE WHO DID THE SAME JOB… IT WAS AS GOOD AS IT GOT…thank god you old boys do not have to do that now,i have seen the cranes on trailers what a GOOD BIT OF KIT…and i bet you wear gloves.lol dbp.

It was the same thing with roof tiles. That was my first job.Leave home at 0200,down to Marley tiles in Kent, load up then back to Colchester area with 2-3 drops, all handball, finished about 1800,home,eat,sleep´then start all over again.I lasted about 6months.

Crowd I worked for had 7 motors 2 without crane I would have jacked if gaffer had mentioned running one of em. Theres only one thing I handball n so often nowadays
