Instead, the 82-page blueprint sets out how a “numerical cap” would be imposed on the number of visas issued to lower-skilled EU workers, who would be allowed to stay for a maximum of two years.
To be imposed after a transitional period of at least two years, the new visa rules would allow people in “high-skilled occupations” to work for three to five years.
so are HGV drivers going to be in the low skilled or high skilled bracket? it will make quite a difference to the number of flipflops ‘stealing’ your jobs for peanuts
If you reduced the number of posts you make to ‘on subject’ you’d reduce the amount of spam & trolling on this site by unimaginable proportions… I realise your thinking capacity will struggle with this fact.
On the subject. Because hgv drivers are qualified & not just any jo blo can do the job, combined with the critical nature of the job… my guess would be they will be excluded from any proposals - should they become plans.
That said, given the effect Brexit is having on the economy, it could well be a non-issue.

The real question is, when did the Tories last do anything to put wages up?
Why is it that you think the party of millionaires and shyster businessmen, have suddenly decided that they want to put wages up?
They have always been able to control non-EU immigration, they have always been able to control minimum wages, they control union laws and wage council laws, and many other things which tend to have an indirect effect on wages. They can control all of this in the here and now.
But having not even placed their hands near any of these levers after two terms and several years in office, and presiding over vast underemployment and the worst stagnation of wages since Queen Victoria was new on the throne, why do you think that some blast of hot air from the arse of an anonymous source suddenly means the Tories are, in 5 or 10 years, going to control EU immigration to any degree that makes a difference to wages?

Please, … anyone can do the job … it’s not hard to drive a truck … it’s hardly skilled is it. Critical nature of the job, you are deluded … you drive from A/B keeping the load as safe as possible … you wouldn’t know a critical job if it jumped up and hit u on the arris.

Unions are backed by Labour always have and always will, that’s the same Labour that want to keep our borders open and increase our annual migrant quota.
Skilled or not skilled, labour will accept migrants they are a cheap workforce, who assist the capitalist gains of a economic socialistic idealism, that’s only a political step from communism
No they are saying unskilled as in no skills at all !
We now have migrants claiming to be unskilled hopeing to get free training .And they get it above uk citizens.
Lorry drivers have many skills. They are talking about fruit pickers etc etc .
It will not stop drivers !And why should it?We go into Europe etc …

Seems to me that Governments, see it as their job to control the masses, the levers they pull are all about that and nothing to do with serving the people.
As for the leak… never put it past Tories to plan a leak.
Sooner or later the working class people will come to realise that Brexit was just a win win Tory plan to increase their controls. By which time there’ll be nothing the poorly educated class can do about it.
It’s a very sad situation and its gonna get pretty bad for the least well off.

so lorry drivers will be able to come and work here for 5 years
and fruit pickers for 2 years
so on the whole not much difference to the numbers, will be good business for immigration agents and lawyers
Low skilled. The reasoning being that high skilled would be doctors, engineers (refrigeration engineers would be in the super duper high skilled bracket) and people with proper degrees generally (not golf course management).

But the flaw in that is that the fruit pickers are seasonal not annual employment, they come here for anything between 4 - 6 months, get paid a low income which is topped up by tax credits ( allowed because they are eu citizens ) and they get on site accommodation. They pay no tax or NI and are allowed free healthcare via the NHS.
They stay here for 6 months then go home and work the fields there or anywhere in Europe, then harvest time on the British fruit farms and they return
Darkside:
I read ‘lower skilled’, as no skill at all.
There is no way foreign drivers with licences will be prevented from coming in.
Any rise in the cost of transport will result in inflation, and all the challenges that brings to a government.
It’s not a case of skilled v un skilled.
The test should be can we fill the jobs using indigenous labour and rigging the labour market,by over supplying it with immigrant labour to minimise wage levels, doesn’t fit that test.
While if the government was that bothered about road transport costs inflation then it obviously wouldn’t be applying an industry specific discriminatory fuel taxation regime which creates exactly that situation.Nor would it be supporting a situation in which the productivety of the industry is unnecessarily handicapped by silly dimensions and gross weights limits.
While taking your point to its logical conclusion would obviously mean wiping out the UK road transport industry anyway by totally lifting cabotage restrictions on the basis of providing the customer with the lowest wage rate possible transport.IE it’s time to start thinking about protecting our own national interests rather than more race to the bottom economics. In which case there’s not much point in trying to protect the UK road transport industry if it’s then going to employ cheap immigrant labour to minimise wage levels anyway.
