V8 Passion:
What about Peter Harding Tansport from Grendon, and Pete Obello (spelling)
The name Pete Obello rings a distant bell. I’m pretty sure that there was a guy with that name (or very similar) that drove for Cadwalladers at the same time I did (1981 - 85) that lived in Tamworth. Would it be the same person??
On second thoughts the bloke I’m thinking of could have been a Pete Arabella (spelling?).
But definitely lived in the Tamworth area.
There’s an old chap of about 70 odd who comes from Tamworth. He lives not so far from me here in Thailand who used to drive wagons. Goes all watery eyed when you mention Mammoth Majors!! His name is Arthur Broad. Anybody know or remember him?
Hi Ron, only just noticed this! I was busy having a second heart attack the day after you posted this, so lost track a bit. Anyway, if it’s the same Arthur Broad who had Springvale Haulage in Saltley in the '70s and then went on the spanners, I know him very well. He used to sub me work and we knocked around together for a while. I don’t think I ever had so many laughs than when in his company and he had the sharpest sense of humour, I still relate his quips to this day. I think he went out to Studley then, but could be the same chap as I know he was in Thailand a couple of years back. I’ll P.M. you to find out more.
J. Clarke Transport Ltd Leyland roadtrain twin steer with a 320 14 litre ■■■■■■■ and spicer gearbox on hand over day at Leyland dealer Brownhills Commercials in 1983
Has Foseco from Tamworth been mentioned, not sure if their transport was “in house” but their motors were to be seen wherever there was a steel works or foundry company in the 70s.

My Dad drove for the Aucotts on and off from (I think) the late 60’s through to the early 80’s. During that time they operated under the name Gibbons & Washingtons transport.
I think the Aucott family bought the two companies, maybe late 60’s. Im pretty sure my Dad drove for Washingtons prior to the take over.
The RE in RE Aucott, was Ruth Elizabeth, who was the mother of the family, and the figure head of the business. However, the business was run by the two sons John and Tim.
I remember when I was a little kid the yard was just a muddy yard that sloped down to the canal at the bottom. I also remember them building the yard, workshop and offices, as they stand today. The yard was built mainly by John Aucott I believe, which got them into the building trade. They eventually turned there back on haulage to concentrate on construction.
My Dad drove a succession of ERF’s for them, I remember an LV reg WBF *** *, An A series PBF *** M and a B series TOA *** S. All day cabs and ■■■■■■■ powered. The Aucotts swore by ■■■■■■■ engines I believe. I remember him having the B series took off him and going back on an A series. The B series got converted to a sleeper cab (not sure if anything else was changed at the same time) and got re-registered as an X reg. It was then sign written “REA truck rentals”. I think most, if not all of there B series trucks went this way, and a fleet of hire trucks was built up. I think the haulage business was slowly wound down after that.
Bridgens from Lichfield road and then later Amington Industrial Estate. They took on Chippys 2 Scania tractor units when he packed up. Worked for them in the office for 5 years before the brothers sold up and moved on, and left just before the company went bankrupt!
