I agree, love the David Williams photos…

Had to drive into Tamworth yesterday - first time in about 15 years! Noticed a very nice-looking EFR ballast tractor parked in a front garden on the Elford road. Does it have an interesting story to tell?

That ERF is owned by air brake Dave it was one of Eric Vicks from Gloucester, think it might be for sale !

Saw this in a field at Sutton on the Hill a little ago - apparantly it is still earning a crust! If you look closely at the driver’s door you can just make out the words ‘J Clarke Haulage’.

Hi Mike p , THANKS fOR THE info Mike Cheers Barry ,

I’ve just had a look at this topic again and just a few bits to put into it.Big shame about Wm Rowe as they had been a well known co around here.I well remember the cattle trucks and their drivers with their “uniforms” in Uttoxeter and Derby markets.Smart motors and well looked after.
Whilst working in Derby I dealt with a company who bought a Ford D-Series 7.5 tonner and brought a very nice A.E.C. Mercury K reg and painted cream.I hadn’t dealt with Rowe’s but I thought they might be interested so phoned them and took it over and after Reg Fearn had looked it over they bought it.After that I called quite often and talked to Gordon and Jim in the office and got on well with them.Later they bought a new D-Series 16t but later on they wanted to buy a couple of Iveco Turbostars and the deal was mine. The only problem was that I could only get finance on one which was a big surprise and I tried to get them both. They did a deal with Baxter’s I think which I thought I didn’t try hard enough but they must have been a bit short of funds.
I remember Trink who was a nice chap and knew his Job.I think he lived at Handsacre.I was amazed at the garage roof that should make into a listed building.I think Reg lived in Winsill but the last time I saw him he was doing a bit of work at Midland Tree Surgeons at Draycott in the Clay servicing chainsaws etc.
I think Clarke’s had a D series with a ■■■■■■■ V.8 when I first knew of them.
Another mention on this topic was the name Colin Perkins. The Colin Perkins I am quite friendly with was a partner with Ken Miller at Tyre and Tune Transport at Castle Greslley so perhaps there are more Colin Perkins than I thought as they didn’t have a 1615.They were going to have a couple of Transco’s but we couldn’t deliver in time so they bought a couple of Fiats so we salesmen didn’t have it good all the time.I think they say that if it’s a good’n it’s one they bought off you but if it’s a bad’n it’s one you sold 'em.

A couple of not very good pics at the Lupin Show

I lived in Tamworth for a short while as a lad. I was at school with an Aucott (Andrew), I’m pretty sure he was one of the hauliers family. I don’t recall any hauliers on the A5 between Fazeley and Mile Oak cos I lived down there. Mind you it was a very long time ago.

Wasn’t Smurfitt the one in Fazeley, somewhere near Foseco/Drayton Manor? I really don’t remember.

john aucott had the yard at fazeley on the A5 near the canal bridge i worked there for about 6 months ,monkey mick ,was transport manager ,called everone bud :slight_smile:that was gibbons and washingtons ,did a lot of work out of foseco.
