anyone remember these tamworth firms

EDSHARK:
I know we have been talking about Tamworth hauliers, but has anyone got any images of Mayfair Garage, the MAN (and before that Guy) main agents at Fazeley?? IIRC, I remember delivering an old MAN tractor unit to them, parking it on the hardstanding at the back of the “glass palace” showroom , which had two new orignal shape Volkswagen Passat cars in it, then going upstairs to the offices with the truck keys!!

Ed

Not come across any photo’s yet of Mayfair garage but will keep looking.

Smart outfit - so good to see a truck and trailer in a livery other than white, especially for a hire fleet - well done!!

Why thank you young man.

A great tool with a very strong crane this mk 3 AEC militant of Wm Rowe & Sons would do 70mph out of stick down Moneymore hill on the A38.

scan0002.jpg

in the 80’s I worked for Crane Fruehauf (tamworth) in parts so many of these firms were customers, Chippy had race horses, our head storesman was a betting man and always took a tip…

Aucott’s (ken the fitter)
Rowe’s
CTS (alan - workshops were so good mercedes used them for some work)

I also worked for York trailers (hence my id…)

I remember Rowe’s and Clarke’s from many years ago when I worked for Edgar Bentley and we were all contractors in Ind Coopes in Burton. The drivers who stick in my memory - Trink, who could rope and sheet a 40 foot trailer and STILL look absolutely immaculate: would overnight in an Atki day-cab, boil his egg for breakfast on his little stove and have his morning tea in a white china cup and saucer, a real gentleman, ■■■■, Albert (Bladder), Dennis who went to the brewery as a driver, and many more. Then there was Steve, who drove Clarke’s Sed-ak - had many nights out all over the country with him. If I remember right, there was a tie-up between Rowes and Clarkes in that Clarkes was owned by one of the Rowe brothers, or was it that Clarkes boss was a director of Rowes - I can’t remember now!

The on the same contract were Jim Rushton, GD Allen and Ensors, all gone now. (I do sound a sad old git, don’t I!)

As I recall, Chippy was a driver with Rowes before he set up on his own with a four-wheeler and was a subbie in the brewery before he expanded his fleet.

Memories!

Steve.

Hi dockspotter, i remember York Trailers been just off the A5 at Cannock, collected parts many times from there, Collected parts every other day in the 80’s and 90’s when at Wm Rowe from Crane Fruehauf Tamworth, cant remember the names of the stores lads, i remember the head storesman and the old boy who never moved from his desk which was against the wall, there was another chap i remember who used to serve me alot always cheerful and red hot on CF parts.
Clarkes used to do alot of repairs and paint spraying in the 90’s for CF, the main man was Graham Waite and the workshop foreman was John Snow.

Tomlinson’s 240 Gardeners (Smokey and Batman amongst others) were kings of the road - 'til I got that F88 290!!

Steve

Hi Steve, have you got any photos ? some of the names you have put on here are a blast from the past, is the Tomlinson you refer to Gerry Tomlinson Transport ?
I still see Chippy he lives six doors away from me. Steve who drove the seddi atki for Clarkes was Steve Tilford in later years he ran his own Transport business call Tilford Transport which he sold last year.

I will have to ferret about in the loft when I go back to England in July - I should have some photos - somewhere!

The Tommo’s on the brewery job with us was E Tomlinson and Sons, Barton under Needwood, although I recall there may have been a Gerry in there somewhere. I think that E Tomlinson was Edgar and two of the sons were Steve (aka Batman) and Maurice, with the youngest son whose name escapes me now.
