Some of the Wm Rowe fleet when there wasn’t enough money to keep them looking tidy !
The Old Station Yard at Elford was the final resting place for many of Wm Rowe & Sons old vehicles, in this picture we see a AEC Mercury which before been scrapped had a flat body, it did multi drop work out of Foseco Tamworth. Note the cab was a sleeper which iirc was converted by Jennings. The vehicle on the right is a D series Ford of ICI Nobble Explosives which was built to tanker spec and delivered explosives from its depot at Fisherwick nr Lichfield to many places around the country. On the back of the Mercury chassis is a accident damaged Sedden Atkinson 400 cab and to the left is a tipper trailer DBJ 8 belonging to another long gone haulier from Alrewas D B Johnson I wonder if anyone out there has any pictures of their mainly ERF fleet?
were djb from on the right along the mad mile at alrewas

No mate on the right just out of Alrewas is Pyeford Garage Bailey’s Transport ran tippers from there many years ago, DMG autos have been there now for over 20 years. D B Johnson IIRC were in Furlong Lane Alrewas which is behind the George and Dragon pub. Houses now stand where the yard was.
J.Clarke Transport’s Leyland Scammell Roadtrain with 14ltr 320 ■■■■■■■ & Spicer gearbox parked up in the old station yard Elford. This vehicle worked out of Foseco Tamworth delivering to the coal pits around Nottinghamshire and Doncaster
tamworth co-op mobile shop one of the Blakeman bros drove it till he emigrated to canada my dad drove it for a while after that
Picture taken when new to the Wm Rowe & Sons fleet in 1979, KUE 872V ERF “B” Series with 240 Gardner, Brain Simpkins was the driver until 1983 when John Rock took over the vehicle on the cattle transportation side of the business.
The first Leyland Roadtrain to enter the Wm Rowe & Sons fleet, powered by an engine I had a soft spot for the Leyland TL12, which I spent many an hour rebuilding!

hi andy
did you sell this truck to an owner driver who use to pull logs of cannock chase
im 100 % sure it was one of your old ones
early 90s
cheers
mike.
Hi Mike, I’ve been racking my brains all day but can’t remember where any of the Roadtrains went, a couple ended up in the old station yard and were used for parts to keep the others going IIRC. I did paint a Seddy Atki for a chap called Ken Deacon who did timber cutting and haulage of tree trunks, may be the same chap !
HI Andy yes his name was ken but he definately had a roadtrain x reg if i remeber rightly or maybe A reg im sure it was one of your old motors anyway trivial i know but always intrested in wm rowe… Anyway better get back to it cheers mike… i have a sed ak myself a 401 day cab looking to start on it in the new yr…

P Whalley & Sons Ltd ran vehicles for many years from Watling Street Wilnecote Tamworth their main activities were general haulage, tipper work and cattle transportation. Houses on Orkney Drive now stand where the old yard was.

showed my dad this pic he seams to think his mate clive dunn used to drive this one …clive went to chrisian salvesen on bhs and then moved to nuneaton
Hi Mike, most of the Wm Rowe Roadtrains were A reg most of them finishing in DNU so it is possible that it was one of them. The picture below is of the Seddy Atki i was on about the day i finished painting it.

What colour was the Diesel ? Bewick.
Why cant I recall the Ponda Rosa, I must have passed it teens of times when running from Hints and Mancetter quarries? Only place that springs to mind is Maria’s Cafe but that was t’other side of Mile Oak lights.
Pete.
