Anybody use laptop as sat nav?

I use microsoft autoroute 2010 and have a small mini dome GPS which is magnetic. It sits on the climbing handle to get in the cab on the passenger side and USB to my laptop. This works great and plots where you are exactly on the screen. It has to be a NMEA standard one to work i find. Good luck. Also i have my lappy on my truck table i bought off fleabay for about 60quid.

Have a netbook on shelf passengerside, connected to touchscreen monitor on dash. I use navmii for navigation(not truck specific) and autoroute for planning.

Copilot do truck spec software for windows, not tried it yet also directions ltd do pc navigator for windows.

i use navigator from directions ltd, truck version, very good they even supply a gps receiver, but im sure the program can be found from other means and a gps receiver can be bought from any electronics shops

Yes, I use Microsoft Autoroute 2013 with a GPS dongle. It’s even better than a real map - easily scaleable and you are always in the middle of it.

I use my ipad as my sat nav with a programme called co-pilot

I use my mini iPad I use the Renault truck nav on it.

+1 on this. I use the Renault app on an iPad.

used a ibm thinkpad with ms autoroute and a usb gps few years back, found it very good tbh but a 5" sat nav is a lot less ■■■■■■■■■■

Has anyone checked the law regarding using a lap-top as a satnav? A driver has just be hauled in by VOSA for mounting a lap-top on his dash, but he was watching a video at the time :open_mouth:

And this guy Lorry driver 'was using laptop sat-nav' before motorway smash which wiped out family of six | Daily Mail Online was using a lap-top to disastrous consequences. I’d take care that simply using a lap-top or iPad is within the law - a sat-nav is a dedicated piece of electronic navigation equipment, a lap-top is not.

A laptop remains in the eyes of the law a moving visual screen (TV) no matter what you use it for I.e. Satnav purposes.
A bona fide Satnav has been designed solely for that purpose and no other.
No matter what you may think about it the Road Traffic Legislation is exacting and specific about every single piece of equipment in road use.
If you are caught using a laptop as a Satnav you are open to prosecution no matter what YOU may think, if you don’t believe me look up the relevant legislation under the Road Traffic Acts.
If you want to use a laptop you can only do so if stationary.
I am no killjoy but don’t open yourself to being ‘Done’ , it’s hard enough earning money without getting ripped off by the law.

if so how u find it? what software u use and which GPS receiver? how does it mount on the dash and survive the sharp breaking  and wobbling!

I have used ms autoroute on my netbook, and it works ok.
I used it in my car, so it was just sitting in the passenger seat.
The gps reciever was the cheapest I could find at the local electronics store… no idea what type or name it had, but it did work.

In the trucks, we have used velcro to stick things to the dash, but I am not sure I would want a laptop on the dash in a fh.
There are laptop holders availible, just a little table, with something to keep it computer on it, but I have no idea who or where you can get one. Oh, and if you are driving different trucks, well…

theres some about it here here
