Another silly question from me about tacho entries

Hopefuly i have managed to get a job that even i cant mess up. I will be moving vehicles from vans to class 1 around between depots or taking them to their mot etc.

Obviously i will be on eu rules as i will be driving on the road and all work time and breaks will have to be recorded on the tacho. My question is this if i am driving a van thats out of scope ie 3.5t or less obviously i cant record that on my tacho as driving so it will have to go down as other work but does it count towards my driving limits.

as said probably a silly question but best be sure before i start.

Try not to use the phrase “out of scope” unless that is what you mean.
It refers to driving a LGV etc but when those driving hours are not in scope of the rules.
It is not about the driving of non-LGVs etc.

You’ll need to record the van driving activities, so either do a manual entry when jumping back into a wagon (the tidiest option), or do a printout and write the Other Work in the van on the back of that (that’s the simplest option). Get a works diary to keep the printouts in, otherwise it’ll get confusing.

You’ll need to know the ME methods for Siemens VDO tachos and Stoneridge tachos - I’ve have links to a couple of videos somewhere, plenty options available on YT.

There’s two other brands of tachos but I’ve never encountered them in real life.

coops, driving a van is other work, and doesn’t count towards your driving limits. It is a bit of a peculiar one yes, but that is the rule as it stands. You would think the fatigue would be comparable.

Ignore what Zac says, the answer to your question is it’s other work, not driving.

Ignore this?

Looks clear to me driving a van is an activity that needs recording, and that it is Other Work.

i was fairly sure that driving a van would have to go down on the tacho as other work however i wasnt sure how to record the driving and if i had to mentally add it on to my driving limits ie 45 min break for 4.5 hours of driving.

The suggestion of watching some yt videos on man entries was good as well because i had forgotten about all that begin and end shift cobblers on a stoneridge

I would suggest ignoring those posters who can’t read a full sentence and understand the entire context:
Van driving being recorded as Other Work

What would have been nicer of me to say was that noremac answered the question, as written, perfectly. It just frustrates me when Zac, who apparently has all the knowledge, and posting before noremac answers different questions or, elsewhere, answers so confusingly that the opposite impression is given. I know this is just entertainment to come on here not work, but do you have this communication problem with your clients?

All the knowledge is out there, just Google it.

My clients are usually smart enough to be able to read a full sentence, and usually are listening to me, rather than trying, and failing, to score some kind of imaginary “brownie points” based on some apparent personal beef of their own creation.

If you’d rather not read my contributions, feel free to add me to your blocked list and these will show only as “hidden reply”. If you find my contributions “confusing” I’ve no problem rewording them to help you more easily understand what I’m getting at.

Google probably has all the correct answers, that is true.

Google probably also has all the incorrect answers.

Like all tools it can be very useful or very damaging. No-one can use a tool skillfully without instruction and experience.
We all need help to sort the good from the bad sometimes.

But that’s my point, the info given by some random on here is easily assessable to all from official sites, I’d much rather research myself thanks.

I don’t know why I answer questions to be honest, it must be something in my character. I regularly check the new driver forum and post there quite often. It does keep me on my toes regarding the rules and regulations.

I always think that if someone is unsure about something, a consensus is usually reached on these forums through the various contributors. I have been wrong before and am happy to admit when I am wrong.

I fully expect to get hammered here … ( so what else is new ? ) … but reading through some of these posts merely reinforces my view that truck driving has ultimately become a total ball - ache .

That’s if it wasn’t bad enough in my time , heaven knows , but do yourself a favour lads , bin the friggin’ job … it ain’t worth a button . I did close on 50 years and came out with Jack .

If I’d got myself a job with the gas board , I’d be holidaying in the Seychelles now , instead of having a weekend in Southport . So listen to the voice of experience lads . ZB the job off now before it’s too late .
Don’t make the same mistakes that I made .

Just a bit of friendly advice , nothing more .

Agree somewhat. There are the truck driving jobs where you are treated like a human being but they are far outweighed by the ones where the driver is treated like something that has been stood in. Add agency into the pot and it’s even worse imo.
