Another HIAB Question

Have been counting up the HIABS I’ve been spotting while out and about.

264 (might be a few duplicates) all rigids.
1 rigid + drawbar with HIAB on the rigid

Just a quick query about them:

Are there HIABS attached to the trailer of rigid?
Are there HIABS on an artic (if so is this attached to tractor unit or can they be attached to front or back of trailer?

Based on my observations so far all HIABS seem to be rigids. I can’t believe that is the case.

Plenty of artic trailers with HIAB fitted, although for most site deliveries rigid or wagon and drags are more practical. In theory you could fit a HIAB to a wagon and drag trailer, but I can’t imagine a scenario when you would want to.

Thanks trucken and mrginge. Did have my doubts about why you would want to have hiab on the trailer of a rigid. Would the hiab have to be part of the tractor unit as it appears to be in photo or can you get them on the trailer itself?

HIAB usually on artic trailer, either fixed in the middle of the trailer, or on rollers/small wheels and runs up and down the trailer. HIABs fitted on tractor unit are usually for more specialised operations.

Having a hiab on a rigid’s trailer would need the rigid to be adapted, as it would need hydraulic connections at the rear, to couple to the trailer. Which would restrict the choice of vehicle to use the trailer. Much easier to have the hiab on the rigid, where it can slew around to reach the trailer.
