Anglo Greek

Hi archie,

I may be mistaken with the colours, but I sure remember the name! This would’ve been in my continental days '91 - late '97?.

regards,

brookie.

Archie: Does this bring back the memories?
Took it in Dover mid 80’s.

Thanks Ash. The two units that I had with that trailer were GJN 243Y, a yellow ex Belgium Transcon, a pig of a thing, that went to Athol Addinson, and a 2800 dks DAF LTU23P, sold that to Lister Carter.

Now Now Ash

Nothing wrong with a beatup old Volvo

Anglo greek, i remember doin a trip to athens with the old man,on our way up to saloniki,in the distance we could see an anglo greek trailer sticking out of the trees, when we pulled up behind it was a mess.Chris Laurence hade hit a tipper truck head on,killing his son who was in the passenger seat and putting himself in hospital in a bad way, poor bloke.Roly Long was also there,we all went to the hospital to see Chris, got to be one of the saddest days i remember. Then if that wasnt enough, when the Herald/Free Enterprize went down in zeebrugge Chris went with it,they were my unfortunate memories of anglo greek.God lv em.

Hi Phil

Yes that was such a bad do I was comming up from Athens and came to Cris’s truck I stopped to stop a greek steeling parts but no dought thay came back later .I bumped into Cris a few weeks later on his way home we had a somber chat ,on my way home I heard he had gone back to his truck on the cargo deck when the Ship went over I beleive he was found in his cab.R.I.P and Son

Hi Archie, that F12 in the picture looks familiar but I can’t place it,is it the one Glen drove, would’nt be anything to do with Graham Soper would it, thought he did some driving for Brian Hogg for a while. Nice to see Rita Haywood is still alive and kicking contrary to some of the rumours, mind you it seems every time you look on this site somebody else is RIP but then the heydays of greece and the middle east are heading towards the distant past and most of us that were young then are or soon will be collecting our bus passes. Got some pics of the old Transcon somewhere, will post them if I can figure out how to, regret now not taking more pics over the years.

regards Charlie Gethin

Hi again Charlie,
Yes I should also have taken more pictures instead of more glasses of beer, wine, spirits, mind you I never seemed to have the time. Yes I should love to see my old Transcon again, Ive not got many pictures of my trucks at all, my sons when they started took more pictures than I ever did. That Volvo, I dont think it was Glens because when he came onto Anglo Greek, with his pal Ossie MaIntosh, they both had those White Road Commanders, it may have been John Collins, from Ashford I think. When I get back in May or June we ought to have a beer together ( your turn to pay I think). Thats if you are still in the UK. How`s the immigration thing going, OK I hope

 elo to Archie P,charlie G,&rita H.bin looking at your coments on the best outfit doing Greece,u say that G soper did a bit for A/GK, I would say 7 years was a good bit, wouldnt u,along wiv nigel hassan, goerge ginn edie nick, billy reeder, big bob lister, & quite a few others. We must rember Cris Lawrence and keith Hill, keith passed away at the Wally stop wen it blew up. Nice to know u 3 still about, take care, ? :sunglasses:

Was Anglo Greek Oggy or George Otipa…?

Hi Harry, Anglo Greek was run by Brian Hogg out of Silvertown and then from Beckton, when they built the new industrial estate next to the ski slope. His Partners in Piraeous were Veonellis shipping. Apart from groupage his main cargo was ships paint, from international paint at Felling.
I used to load at Felling on a Monday morning, leave there at lunch time run down to silvertown and top up with groupage leave there in time to catch the 01.00 ferry dover calais. Transit France then over Mont Cenis to Italy as i had hazardous cargo and had to be in Ancona by 10.00am Wed for the evening ferry. If you did not book in by 10.00am they would give your booking away. Arrive Patras Thurs evening and run up to St Nicks Square in Piraeus.
05.30 friday morning Jimmy the runner was knocking on your door for your papers and told you to go to dock gate ■■ and he would meet you there and you would have your groupage tipped by 09.30, you would tip your paint at the paint warehouse in the afternoon. Set off on the saturday to catch a ferry from patras to Brindisi.
Run up through italy Sunday night and load maybe Como monday and back to the uk to tip that week and then the same again two trips a month and with TIR Carnet. Regards Jamie.

Hi
Charlie Gethin You old bugger not many people new the name Rita Haywood
its also great to hear your still with us as well there maybe a big get together of drivers soon so keep your eyes peeled

Roger Haywood

M&C Jamie I knew Oggy when he did Italy for Whitings of West Mersea. He then did Greece for George ( One of the tricks was before he sealed the trailer he would get a side board & poke it up on the roof to make the trailer more than 4M then book on the train in Kohln ,pay the fare ,go outside & point to the overheight. Then get the permit stamped to go by road after claiming the refund in cash & keeping the receipt to give to George .Luvly! ) & then in a brief partnership with a Roger from Sudbury they nicked the work from Otipa.& never looked back. I did the first trip for Oggy ;shipped out to Athens got a return trip to Amsterdam ,turned round @ the Hook with a loaded trailer for Greece. Dropped a valve on a F88 in Lubiana ,& this was in December .Sorted it out ,took about a week & carried on to Athens .Got home just before Xmas.Meanwhile Brian had driven down to Athens in his little MG sports thing & had missed me on the road. I was a little surprised when I saw him marching towards me in a Piraeus street.
Naturally he defaulted on payment & went on to be rich & famous.Any idea who he’s doing these days?

M c Jamie

Interesting story but how do you claim cash from Kombiverkehr when the booking is made and paid for in the UK, never knew of this when I used the Train.

Good Heavens Jamie, I got a nose bleed just reading that, I could feel the G force pushing me back in my chair.
We must of been doing the Rothmans job to Piraeus wrong, as we always seemed to arrive at the docks after 10 a.m. on a Friday morning. We then had to phone the office to tell them that we were weekending yet again and there was nothing that we could do until Monday.
We would then drop the trailers in the docks in the secure customs compound and go bob tail around to The Lantern Bar where the Island ferries used to come in. Then it was down to the beach at Glyfadia were we would frequent The Sussex Bar and The Essex Bar, both English pubs.
Can anybody remember the name of the bar maid from Salford.
