Anglo Greek

Cliff luxton:
National hotel Belgrade on way to Greece damned cold.

Were you on for Mondial ?
I started young too, did my first trip to Rome when I was 18…shhhh !!
Then started properly after I got my Class 1 at 21yrs and was on for Astran with my own truck and trailer all paid for by the time I was 25.
Bob Paul called me and Gary Glass “the Injection of Youth” because we were the young boys on Astran with all the old ■■■■■.
Happy days
What a great way to earn a living as a young single man.

Hullo all,
I’ve been off for a while, and just thought I’d have a look on the old Anglo Greek thread to see what’s been going on. Not too much it seems. Have we all ran out of Tales ? Or are we all past it now.
What I should like to do is say a big Welcome Home to Charlie Gethin, on his return to England after a few years in America. A good friend from the days we were running to Greece. Welcome back Charlie.

Hi Archie.I haven’t spoken to Charlie for a few yrs now, only via here so was only aware that the old boy was not well.I had no idea that he had returned to the UK.
If you speak to him ask him to put something on here about his ‘‘trials and tribulations’’ and returning to the UK.We are getting fewer by the week so its nice to know about old friends.I thought he was settled in USA for Life. Thanks Mike

Welcome back Charlie it would be nice to speak sometime.

Many thanks Archie, nice to be back and seeing old friends and family, not so keen on this damp, gloomy weather. the English countryside is lovely but I’m missing the blue skies and open roads already.

Thanks Mike and Cliff, only returned last wednesday, it is good to be back as I said, busy settling in and sorting out some work, not made enough to retire yet, still only a trainee millionaire, just trying to arrange a course for this bloody stupid Driver CPC but nobody will give you any work without it. Mike can you message me with your email, I thought I had it but can’t find it. Cliff, I want to get down your way next year with ‘‘her indoors’’ for a weekend so we’ll call in just let me know the name of your pub, it’ll be good to catch up.
all the best. Charlie

Hi Charlie.Glad to hear you’re ok. My mail is lappimike@gmail.com
Put it on here as i’m not sure about other ways, anyway it’s not secret.

By the way,if your missing the climate and weather we just had 30cms snow and yesterday the temp dropped to a ‘‘fresh’’ - 25c.Mike

Charlie,
I’m back in England on 24th,March. If you and your good lady go down to see Cliff at about that time, me and the missus can meet up at Cliff’s Pub and you can buy me a Mataxa or two. I was thinking of going that way anyway, nor only to see Cliff, but to show Maria Lucia the South West of the country on the way home.
I hope you’ve got sorted out for the CPC thingy. and find a job soon. Are you back in the Bicester area.

Hello Archie, we’re staying in Stow on the wold for a while til we find somewhere we want to stay in for a longer period, sorted out the stupid cpc should start it in the next few days.
Definitely a good idea to meet up down south next year. Enjoy Christmas in the heat old chum, best to you both.

Hi Charlie, Stow-on-the-Wold? You’re not far from me then! Chris

How far is not far then Chris.

Hi Charlie,
I didn’t exactly know where Stow on the Wold was, so I Googled it. It looks a real nice place mate, and not too far away from your old stomping ground. Get that stupid CPC thing out of the way and I’m sure you’ll soon get a job when the news of your return gets out. I hope all going well and your all beginning to feel a bit more settled. When I saw where it was I remembered I once spent a night or two in a Hotel in Broadway, with a friend of mine’s Mother.

Hullo Charlie,
How did Christmas and the New Year go for you ? Back home after your great adventure, did you get through the gruelling CPC thing yet, and have you managed to get yourself a job yet.
We had the normal, or normal for here Holidays, I feigned Illness for the Christmas one, as here you go to whoever’s house is the Party house for this year, sit around jawing and drinking until just before Midnight, then you all gather round the room holding hands in a big circle (rather like a Wolf Cub Meet ) then the one who’s house it is starts the Prayer meeting thing off and it’s all Mumbo Jumbo prayers and chanting for half an hour, then one by one everyone goes home. The next day ( I was better by then ) you all go back to the house, the Buffet is full of food, so you all start eating, drinking, swimming or just sit out on a deckchair. New year is much the same but only on the Day, and without the Mumbo Jumbo bit.
Let me know how you’ve found it since your return. It’s good to know that the bad things disappeared and that you are fighting fit once more. I do hope that you’ve managed to find a nice little job to see you on your way. I am back home at the end of March.

Just been on Facebook & found out Brian Hogg died back in 2013!!
I knew he’d retired & moved out to Crete but shocked to find this out!!
Wondered if any body knows anything?
I worked for & subbied for Brian from '83 through to '01.
I know he wasn’t everybodies cup of tea but he was always right with me!!

Surprised that wasn’t posted Before on here as he was ‘‘rather well known’’.As you say Hoggy wasn’t everyones cup of tea but fair do’s to the man he was certainly one of the Greece pioneers.

This was the last company that I went abroad with, I packed it in at the start of i994, but I had a good couple of years there,

Blimey, thats a name I remember, seem to recall a blue supercube tilt with anglo greek on it.? Never knew anything about them, but the name jogs my memory!

brookie.

Hi Brookie, We had all sorts of tilt colours ( mostly from the paint that got spilt on them) , we always carried International Marine Paint, Felling on Tyne to Piraeus. We only though had two tilts that were signwritten though, they were bright yellow with the name in black capital letters. I had the first one of these and Glenn Campbell had the other one.
