Hi All,
Ive been away for a couple of weeks , visiting the South of Brasil. The Corinth Canal was built in the mid 1800s it was as Roger said, A French company that started it. But they only opened up the two enda of the canal, then went broke, the Canal was actually mostly built and finished by the Greeks. And like you Charlie I was lucky enogh to transit it once by ship, That was in 1962 when I was 2nd Cook/ Baker on a Cargo Passenger ship a Furness Withy/Prince Line ship the “mv. Sycamore” A few more names of the lads doing Greece when I was, were, Dave Wilson, Alan Piner,Derek Rance,Nick the Greek , Pat Riley, Roger Haywood, Kenny Hooper, Noddy?, Graham Murray, Joe Taylor, Russel Emptage, Ray Emptage, Dave Burlingson, Hamish (RIP) David Hogg, Dave Johnston, Chinky Nev, Roly Long, Dennis Newley, Bill Lorrenti (RIP) Charlie Gethin, Mac Mciver, John Gaskell, Bob Pearson (Wor Bob). There were loads of us on it, I wonder where they all are now?

Noddy?

Would this by any chance be Robbie Dobson of Newcastle upon tyne, i live in the same village as him near Newcastle and worked with him a few years ago at Answer transport doing mostly Switzerland and Germany, i know he did a lot of Greece years ago as he told me several tales after a few drinks whilst we were weekend’ed ■■?

Hullo Matty,
Yes thats the bloke Robbie Dobson, NODDY. He was on for Mondial for a very long time. How is he keeping, I thought I heard he went onto Browne Warrier. Theres a lot of people on this sight that will remember him. Ask him how Sue is, or ask him if he still sleeps in lifts in his underwear. But do give him my regards.

Hi Archie, I know that one of the above names was very involved with a Thai girl who worked for Thai Airway’s, if you know who I mean do you know if he ever married her.

Regards Steve.

Hi all, regarding Kenny Snooks and Yvonne; she was his first wife and they got together again after many years through one of his childrens matchmaking. In fact if I’m not wrong I think they even remarried then they went to live down near Piraeus where Kenny operated as an O/D until his untimely death.

Hullo Steve,
No sorry Steve I cant help you, I dont know who you mean. One of those names was always into Thai women, but mostly in the bars around piraeus. He always ran overland with an old 140 Scania and a stepframe tri-axle tilt. Another one of those names does seem to live out there an awful lot of the time from what I hear. But no Steve I don`t really know who you mean.
Cheers, Archie.

Archie you have a P.M. .

Hullo Steve,
Thanks a lot, I`ve sent you a reply. Yes he was a friend of mine.
Cheers, Archie.

Hey Archie

Yeah thats correct he worked for Brown Wharrier but they folded in the early 90’s i worked with him at Answer europa trans but unfortunately they went the way of most firms doing general european work a few years ago and now the owner only runs one truck that he drives himself.
I bumped into Robbie last week having not seen him for several months he is fit and well and now driving for Elddis transport doing U.K. work, i know he had fond memories of his time running to Greece and working for George he told me it was a great job.
I will phone him on the weekend and tell him about this and pass on your regards.

Thanks Matty.

Hullo Mac,
I should love to see those photos, but I dont know why but I am unable to open them. Have you any ideas on how to do it please. Bloody hell Ide quite forgotten about Freddie Noble, have you seen him recently ? If you do see him please give him my best regards
Cheers, Archie .

Hi Archie, I could’nt open them either so Mac’s cocked up somewhere as for Freddie Noble I know his wife died a few years ago and he was working with Derek Garrard for a short while on some film work in morroco a couple of years ago so he’s still alive and kicking. I’ll always remember one of Fred’s stories about when he had a Scania 111 on his way back from the middle east and the alternator packed up in the middle of winter. On pulling into some services he saw a german 111 with the engine running & the driver asleep so Fred got underneath cut the belts and disconnected the alternator threw it in his truck & drove to the next parking, fitted it in the morning, got a jump start off a turk and carried on back to uk. Resourceful chap Fred.

Hullo Charlie,
That sounds like Fred eh ? Now if hed said he left his engine running and got under the Germans Scania, nicked the alternater and did a bit of a runner, then thats OK. But to get under a motor thats still running and cut through the moving belt ■■ Hmmmm! Wheres Macs deflectors ? Anyway more importantly old chum, how is the crippled knee coming along ? I hope by now its a lot easier and that you are able to get down to Spain alright. I shall be back in Portugal by then, so I can watch the race in comfort. I should land back in the UK somewhere about 13th - 14th,May. Im bringing my bird back with me so itll take me a few days from Lisbon to Dunkerque I should think. Ill give you a call when Im back in Europe. In the meantime try to get Mac to sort those bloody pictures out.
Cheers, Archie.

Halo u old buzzards

Seems to me I heard that belt cutting story a few times it must be one thats handed down    takes some believing wasnt the alternator up high on a 111 I might be wrong some one correct me still dont believe it though

Roger Haywood

Hullo All,
Yes it was a bit far fetched that tale. was´nt it ? But I´ll tell you one like it that is just as far fetched but true. I knew the man involved, I lived at his house for a while and I drove for him for a time. Once upon a time there was a young Irish lad who happened at the time to be doing a bit of spanner work around South East and East London, Dn A**x***r, (R.I.P) was the man. he was doing a bit of work for Lew and Nigel from North Farm once , when there was a bit of a panic, one of their motors had broken down in Istanbul, so out flew your man, took a taxi and found the truck, the gearbox was knackered, the next day he wasnt having much luck with it, so I believe it was at the Mocamp this all happened, he got under a Turks F88 or F89, whichever it was, at the time Turk and his family were dossing down in the back of the trailer, and he actually dropped the gearbox out of the Turksmotor did a runner with it and put it straight into the Mavertons motor, job done everybody except one was happy with the result , the driver was on his way again, Lew and Nigels worries were over, and your man was in for a good few quid in his pocket when he got home. then he flew back to London. Now I got that from the horses mouth, unfortunately hes no longer with us, but I am sure that somebody else must have heard about this as well . I do for one believe it.

Hi Archie

Cmon mate thats worse than the alternator one nicking the gearbox ok but not when turk is in the trailer and not on his own he could not lift it by himself unless his name was Arnie(ill be back)Swarzy,

Cheers Roger Haywood

Hullo Roger,
Hope youve had a good Easter. I told you it was another far fetched tale didnt I ? Almost as you say unbelievable ! But he told me himself, but only because somebody else had mentioned it and I asked him. Having known the bloke though and seeing some of his other antics, I do believe it. Am I gullible or what.
Cheers, Archie.

Hi Roger, I know you said the alternator story sounded as if it had been handed down but it was Fred who told me it and if your running on candle power and a long way to go I suppose needs must. Don’t forget we are talking of a man with a very long hose and a pump on his truck.
Charlie

Did he have a very long hose or a very long nose  .

sorry, i still dont know how to down load these bloody photos, this site is to complicated for me, why cant the make it simple, i am a truck driver not a IT WALLAH,TUT,
