This Volvo was new at The Sandwell Vehicle Show.
It was owned and operated by T & S Element of Oldbury. Now gone.
It used to work out of the Premix plant at Smethwick but could also be seen at ARC at Rowley Regis and Elements sand quarry at the Stewpony
Hi, Just found this thread…I still work for Hanson and have done for 35 years since the Amey days.
I remember this truck coming into our Oldbury mortar plant almost daily, if I remember the driver (who’s name I can’t remember!!) used to wear a cap!
I have several photos spanning a few years and will put some up over the next few days.

Hi Toshboy , I worked for Ameys in the early sixtys at Northumberland Av in Reading which used to be Hills transport before Ameys bought them out , in them days they ran thames traders and one artic which i drove that was a tk bedford which pulled a four in line flat trailor ( horrible thing ) we did a lot of dock work out of London ie Surrey com /King George ect. Then we moved to Cardiff Rd when we got small ford five toners and a larger ford which i think was seven tons ,and i got a new artic which i hoped was going to be a AEC but turned out to be a Albion with the new ergomatic cab, but i did have Leyland engine in it.Then they closed the depot at Reading.

Hi cryogent.welcome to the thread-- yes i remember the Reading depot ex Hills. i was at that time on distribution vans and used to cover Reading /Slough/Windsor daily ,from Wooton depot -finishing at Nestles Hayes or Mars Slough for return loads at night — mainly Ford Thames 4d s . not much chance of an aec on Ameys though ha ha --they liked the cheaper models --the Albions were ok -the one i had used to slip out of top gear on the overun downhills ,i was transferred to Premix soon after- remember charlie gannon /john brouard ■■ ----------------toshboy

Hey Toshboy, Grice street, West Bromwich…I was based there at the office from 1997 - 2005 when the office was closed, the plant (a Steelfields) remained as a mortar plant until 2011.

Found this photo today which I took out of Dads’ cab mid '90s; Cat 773B at Chipping Sodbury.
Hi Nathan
Not arguing with you, just querying and interested …are you sure thats Sodbury?
I can’t recall any 773’s there but there were 775’s up until a few years ago. That photo actually reminds me of Whatley but not too sure - could be Tytherington perhaps?
Edit! Having a dull moment again… Had a think and Sodbury’s first Cat dumper WAS a 773, driven by a guy with one eye He tipped into the primary one day and didn’t bother putting the skip back down. He got as far as the tunnel and came to an abrupt stop…
There were a couple of Terexs’ about and possibly an Aveling Barford? The Cat pic I took was taken in the area between the type 1/scalps area and where the dust was washed to make sand. There were a couple of scrapped machines there aswell I think??
hi toshboy, i wrote the other day that i worked out of Reading on Ameys but for got to mention that when we moved to Cardiff road, we started to trunk to Frome and then on to Exeter. Over night on route and back next day if i remember right. There is photo of the Albion and trailor that i had at Reading ( or similar) cant remember number plate, long time ago??

Piston Broke (Paul), just found this one from Sodbury, which tallies with your “first Cat was a 773”;

That old tub certainly does tally up with the 773 There was only one of that model Terex and jeez, was it slow! You’re quite right, there was also a couple of older ones and an ancient Barford used for stocking duties.
Quite an interesting pic because just to the right of the Terex is a two tone green ERF. I’m fairly sure that this was the last lorry that L.Cam and Son bought before they finished up. It was only around a year old when they got it. They offered their drivers the chance to go O/D and the guy with this lorry took the chance - this was his when the pic was taken because the name has gone from the doors. He’s still around now and still driving only his second truck, a '95 ERF 8-wheeler. A lovely bloke and one of the most gentle drivers that I’ve known… I think he’s the only remaining L.Cam and Son O/D as well - from around a dozen of them…
Not sure when the last time was that you were down, Nathan. The wash plant has long gone…all there is now is a mountain of dust! I guess its too far to come on a loading shovel…
I haven’t been in Sodbury for about 10 year as Smiths switched to RMC for their type 1 out of Wick and Wickwar. I did a few loads as a driver when I had a 3000 series 6w; It used to leave the FL7s and Seddon Atkis behind up Sodbury Hill…

Did they switch because of the gas explosion in Wickwar village? When they cleared that up, the council promptly put a 17 tonnes weight limit there, which just about knackered everyone hauling from both quarries. Thinking about it though, that happened a long, long time ago - you’re probably too young to remember
Hi Littlehotdog, I wonder if the Leyland Mastiff (or whatever) was driven by Reuben, the Jamaican guy? I’m sure he was the one who put a Bathgate cabbed 6w into a ditch along Tar Lane, Stanton Harcourt? He ran an 8w Volvo FL (N reg) as his last lorry before retiring.
