HI Davidcox,
You reminded me of that section of the A420 Besselsliegh–before the road was put through it was a series of double S bends ,one of them right on the turn to Wootton ,as you say there was an Engineering works as well past there ,cannot remember whether the Caravan transport cafe was on that same site at that time.
Ron Amey and his yachts-he changed them often -some of his crew worked in the Group-his skipper lived in Besselsliegh. i have a photo of one of them somewhere. once i had to rush some equipment to Appledore for him -thats where his yachts were built… ToshboyHI M
I went to Appledore once for Ameys, They bought a big dredger Boat thing it was berthed there I had to take some equipment for it
I think that the cafe came after the factory closed.
Talking of the yacht, I had to hand winch (the one on the tasker trailer) a prototype of a raisable keel of Rons design to allow him to get closer into the shore, they wanted to know how quick it could be done and I was a fit old boy in those days.
David
Muckaway:
That little round house you mentioned was the old tollhouse from the Oxford Swindon turnpike; Part of a network of them that included “the White House” Pub in Oxford near the station. My Father In law’s been down at the mothballed Conbloc plant at Ringwood recently; the ■■■■■■ keep breaking in for metallic souvenirs…I expect when John Lee falls head-first into a silo they’ll get legal aid to sue the site owners
The ■■■■■■ have been at Ringwood again recently; this time using the overhead conveyors and aggregate bins to get inside. The plant’s got more guards on it in it’s mothballed state than it did as a working plant (all doors sealed with steel plate etc)
I’ve been “digging” around and found these

Hi Muckaway,

Re Ringwood -its a long time since i was there last but is’nt it a multi company Premix ,Aggs and Conbloc site-if so do the ■■■■■■ only go for Conbloc or is the whole site mothballed? Toshboy

Hi Jamie, this pic was emailed to me by a mate, couple of them send pics to me with lorries on (they’re into old BL cars).
Stanfields’ pics of Chipping Sodbury wagons brings back memories; I used to go with Dad down there during school holidays when Smiths were quiet to pick up Type 1 for stock. I’ve been down there a handfull of times as a driver but Smiths changed to RMC Roadstone/Cemex for their Carb-stone several years ago so I stopped going down there.
With Dad, I could never get over the size of the crushing plant and the fact that 2 of those big Cat dumpers could tip into it while a third (the backup was a Terex) waited for the hopper to part empty before tipping. I always remember FG Bonds 4 wheel ERFS (E/ES6s’?) being polished whenever there was a wait at the coating plant.
The Scammell tanker; I’m sure that ended up at Sodbury as a bowser? I remember seeing one somewhere…ARCs used to have ex army Bedfords as explosive wagons down there aswell…

From what I understand Ivor, is that the whole site is closed; the quarry is worked out and if the block plant is flattened all the land has to be restored to nature so it’s cheaper to leave it standing (and keep blocking up ■■■■■ holes presumably).
Nuneaton block plant (which I think was acquired from someone else) is closed and demolished, not sure about St. Ives as there is a large modern one operating near Peterborough that’s replaced a couple in that region. Stanton Harcourt closed along with Premix plant and Browns Pit about 3/4 years ago although Hansons’ have apparently got planning to reopen Browns and Cassington pits.
congratulations muckaway.

Hi NZ Jamie An interesting photo -you say you took it – where ? the signwriting on the cab says PREMIX , to my knowledge that Company never ran tippers or is it just a make up photo ? Perhaps its a truckmixer Bison with a tipper body conversion ,

Hi Nathan
A little more up to date info for you…
Now Komatsu dumpers (Jap crap…), about 60 tonnes capacity tipping into a 600 tonne an hour crusher… Coating plant ‘mothballed’ because of building downturn, probably never to re-open. 40 years old but better than most of the new ones…one of the last of the Stothert and Pitt plants…
I can’t ever remember a Scammell bowser but I may be wrong. I do remember a Foden Haulmaster with knackered power steering - they put the tank right on the back and it was fine when it was full…
All the ex-army stuff has gone now, elfing safety saw them off because you had to use the wheel ring to get in the cab and there was a risk of slipping! Bloody nonsense
Many congrats to you and the good lady on the new addition to the fleet, make sure you enjoy the formative years as much as possible because it won’t be long and he will be as big and ugly as the rest of us!
No driving the pram on the grass either…

I wonder why a lorry, new in 1980 would’ve been converted just 4 years later? M aybe OD upgraded to a Constructor as the Ergo cab would’ve been outdated by 1980

A few mysteries about this one,Premix on the door,Premix cabs never had headboards-the number plate ? toshboy
The block plant at St Ives is opertated by Marshalls and is still going strong.
Hanson have an asphalt & premix plant there and again both are still operating.
Mick George has his waste disposal operation there as well.
Hanson are still operating the pits at Needingworth and Somersham.

Reason for this mate is because the photo has appeared on eBay UK and sold by an unscrupulous lad on here - IE, someone on the make.
I’ve had the very same happen to me; photos lifted from my Flickr account, printed then sold off. Quite wazzed off by it but there’s nothing it seems I can do about it. Think there’s a couple on eBay at it, I even sent an message to one and he was rather brazen about it all pleading ignorance (blantant lie in my book)
OK, a lot of pics I put on here aren’t taken by me, but I put them on for the sole enjoyment of others and most definitely not to be ‘copied’ and sold on for profit.
Sorry if this seems a mardy post, but felt the post by Jamie needed a straight forward reply.
Oh, and if you wonder why I’ve not been posting any pics just lately, it’s for the above reason.
