Ambulance Coach

Did anyone else see it going south on the M6 this afternoon about three o’clock?

What’s it all about? A fairly old vehicle, no lights or stickers, with lots of stretchers visible through the windows…

Probably not the same vehicle but we have one locally which is parked in the town centre on Friday and Saturday nights to administer 1st aid, help and ‘protection’ for those clubbers who have imbibed too much vino collapso.

There is a big vintage vehicle rally just outside Cirencester this weekend… Saw lots of old trucks heading that way down the m5 today. Might have been going there.

Seen it a few times, possibly military.

Been around since the 70’s. It’s called the “Jumbulance” and it’s used to take the disabled on trips. holidays etc. http://www.jumbulance.org.uk/what-we-do/what-is-a-jumbulance/

The ones I’ve seen were unmarked and a dark colour. They also had the blue lights on the roof though, can private ambulances use them?

BAOR window-lickers were easily converted from troop/school-run mode to medic role. Seats out, stretcher frames in.

Ok thanks for the replies, I should clarify the coach looked about twenty years old.

It regularly brings the disabled etc to Lourdes here in France.

Could get a 54 seater coach rolled to an ambulance in about an hour and a half tops.
A couple of socket sets and you were away.

We’ve got one near us that belongs to a local trust/charity. It’s called the “Jumbulance”. It takes sick people around on touristy trips.

Earthline have one in their colours, takes the quarry staff to Shipton pit. AKA “The Sunshine Bus.”

Quite a few ‘Jumbulance’ vehicles about in the early 1980s.
They were used by charities to take disabled people on trips - Lourdes was a regular destination.
In addition to normal sized coaches, there were purpose built articulated coaches.

As ‘soldier z’ says in his post, above: The majority of military coaches were built to a spec which made them convertible to stretcher carrying vehicles.
After disposal by the military, many have found further use with civilian bus operators:

Interesting, thanks for the pics. You don’t see many articulated coaches around do you?!

Spotted this on the A34 a few years ago
