Alloys

Just a rough Idea please, what would be the weight saving of alloys v steel and while we are at it what sort of weight dose a lift / tag axel add to a unit ?

Not 100% sure but I’ve been told 500KG roughly mate no doubt someone will be along to state the facts

Think it is about 250kg on an 8x4 (eg 12 wheels) does not really stack up financially in my humble opinion.

I’ve posted this before somewhere but can’t find it. Where I used to work we swapped a set of steels on a 6x2 XF105 onto a set of alloys and the weight saving was 80kg over a weighbridge. Not enough in my opinion. Matt.

A 7.50x 22.5 steel rim will weigh about 40kg. An equivalent aluminium rim will weigh about 24kg. When the industry changed from the old three piece rims for tubed tyres over to one piece rims and tubeless tyres the difference was considerably more.

Weight saving swapping alloys for steel on a 6x2 unit around 100kg and on a trailer 120 kg

Weight of a tag axle would be between 500 and 750kg

Thanks chaps
