Hello All
Just wondering what are the benefits of Alloy wheels apart from the extra payload and the look of them?
Any idea of where to buy them?
Thanks

Really it’s payload that would be the prime reason to opt for alloys over steel but they do seem to be more resilient to the effects of brake dust and road grime too. Add to that the better perceived image of alloys, e.g. People know they are more expensive so your service must be more premium, or you take care of your wagons so you are more likely to take care of my freight and there are a couple more reasons there.
As for sourcing, alcoa et al are often seen advertising direct to hauliers in the likes of CM or your dealer should be able to supply. If you operate new vehicles you can spec alloys from the factory which saves either storing or disposing of the unwanted wheels.

More payload, look better, good.
Take more looking after, (even new Staybrights) and cost more, bad.

Never heard of anybody getting a job or a better rate in General haulage because they’re running shiny alloy wheels.
Fair point well made and beautifully presented Muckles though I was referring more to a tiebreak situation. Identical quotes and a fussy client. I wasn’t suggesting that Maritime would pay a poshed up wagon rate or something like that.

I wouldn’t want to ever have to work for customers who think like that . They are the ones to avoid .
Weight is the only real advantage, few drivers bother to look after them, they only look better if cared for.
Steelies look scabby quickly because
A the paint finish is rubbish and where a caring driver might polish his alloys he’s unlikely to be able to keep them painted on the road.
B the person in charge of the vehicle’s steering wheel drives on the brakes, as trained the modern way, so the things are covered in layers of brake dust which gets ingrained permanently into the paint, alloys treated this way look crap in weeks too.
C tyre fitters drop them on the floor face down and generally take less care when tyre changing, they tend to be more careful with alloys cos alloy gets dented innit, claim .
If weight wasn’t an option i’d run steels but have them powder coated properly in bright silver, and look after them.

Nick, I think you will find that the person making the decision on a “tiebreak” situation, would not know an alloy from an Albanian, the number cruncher`s are those grey faced robots with hunch backs you see every now and then, as they shuffle between meetings…
Thank you for all your replies, would alloys make an affect on MPG’s?? Obviously being lighter? I don’t know I’m just curious
Also does it have an affect on truck speed? Or not. Thanks
Yes mine pulls like mad since I put alloys on also they make it faster it’s like having helium filled .

That’s with a Foden Dan, think of all that work if you had a blinged up V8,the phone would melt!

[/quote]Dan’s phone would melt from constantly phoning parts suppliers to get the sodding V8 back on the road to actually do some work!

On tippers or trucks running at top weight most of the time there was a good weight saving to be had with alloys but otherwise they can be an expensive item with no real advantage if bulk more than weight is what you carry.
Pete.
