Alfred Dexter/Cyprien Fox/J & H Transport Services Ltd

I drove a 8wheeler AEC for them, from Tower Hill depot, shant forget the guard dog in a hurry !!

My late father drove for Alfred Dexter and Buckleys, his name was Kenny Richards if anyone remembers him.

I think Clarksons from Leeds were part of the Cyprien-Fox group. I backloaded off them in late 60s,concrete paving for Norwich IIRC,all handball of course but it was Sheffield holiday fortnight and nowt doing,so a bit of tramping to keep out of yard was in order.

Is this the J&H Transport you are referring to Dennis ? transportphotos.com/road/photos

Yes that’s correct John, that is a nice period shot you have put on there. But it was from a later era I was referring to i.e. late 60’s and wasn’t long after that they got swept up in Ralph Hilton’s Group. But dealing with them as a 21 year old O/D was , shall we say, an “experience” not to be forgotten even after 50 years ! Cheers Dennis.

Yea Trev J&H ran some of the first LB76s their head office was in Peckham ( nothing to do with Del Boy but they could have taught him !!) I used to pick small consignments up from their Dunstable depot for Kendal their Dunstable manager then ( late 60s) was a chap called Edwards who went on to run that refrigerated outfit from Leighton Buzzard ( I think ). One of their other managers was a chap called Halliday who branched out on his own and got a large slice of the UK massey Fergusson traffic from Coventry .Glad you are paying attention !! Bewick.

Cyprian Fox had a depot in London Road, Glasgow.

Dave.

P S I’ve loaded on the “stones” at Covent Garden a few times my-self always for Dockers of Barrow good rate but a B****y grueller all the same !! Bewick.

Hy, J & H was Julian (sp) & Haymen, in the late 50’s and early 60’s they used to run AEC Mk 3’s and Leyland Octopuss 8 wheelers on night trunk to Liverpool, they also had some Bedford S 4 wheelers, I believe they were bought out by Hiltons. Cyprian Fox had a depot in Holloway, later Enfield, North London and acted a lot of the time as a clearing house while still running their own vehicles. Alfred Dexters used to run from Kentish Town in North London to Liverpool on night trunk, their head office was in Southampton Row, Covent Garden where almost all of their Liverpool bound fruit traffic was sourced, they ran nearly all Atkinsons, Artics and 8 wheelers allthough they had at least 1 Guy Invincible unit, all were Gardner powered, 6LW’s and 6LX’s they have been mistakenly called a Liverpool company, this is not correct…Tony.

See Tony this thread is right up your street as you are a mine of useful ( I said USEFUL!! ) info when your memory is jolted! You have remined me of an episode involving Dexters back in 1969 . When you left Tamworth going north on the A5 you start climbing up towards Hints and this particular morning one of Alfreds old Atky night trunkers must have given the clutch a right old jerk on the hill as all his reels of Liner board had come off and rolled down into the corn field below the road they had spread out all over the field — What a sight for sore eyes !! Cheers Bewick.
