Hi Potter,
This is my first post and as a fellow epileptic, I have had similar feelings following the destruction of my planned career at an early stage due to epilepsy.
The up side was the career I could not follow was in the RAF, and I ended up as a junior in a large transport organisation.
37 years later, I have had 19 different jobs and am still with the same company and now am in a senior position.
So what practical information can I offer.
As Brados mentions get in touch with the British Epilepsy organisation - they will advise on any future changes in the law which may affect your position (the original waiting time to regain your car licence used to be 3 years back in 1966!).
They will advise you on your legal rights regarding your current employment, and can advise how best to pursue any claims against insurance companies.
You appear to have a positive outlook (after been fit free for 27 years, I had a fit in January this year, and on coming round thought thank goodness I was n’t driving).
Were you receiving treatment - medication etc, after the first fit, if so, you get protection under Disablity Discrimination Act.
I do not know who your employer is, and I know that you (sort of) scorn a management position, but some of the best managers I know started as drivers and saw a move into “the office” as a natural progression. Perhaps ask if you can work in some sort of supervisory role until a decision on your future can be made - who knows you may like it, and your employee may find you bring a perspective to the role that they need.
Any way good luck and keep us informed of your progress, or of any questions that between us we may be able to help with.
