Hi all,
I registered with an agency last week (Driver Hire in Cardiff).
I hold a class 2 license so will be driving van/7.5 tonne and class 2 hopefully.
Anyone know what kind of work is more likely for me to do?
Would it be short multidrop drives or can I expect any long distance drives?
Any information will be greatful…

Fairly unlikely to be distance work. I’d say, supermarket, pallet, skips.
Until you get your feet under the table, expect the dregs. Multi-drop, early starts and all the crap . Start low, like I did and grow.

Could be anything at all, we’ve no way of knowing what clients DH in Cardiff have.
DH are a franchise operation, no two are alike.
If you get the chance of any bin wagon work, grab it with both hands, it’ll be a massively steep learning curve but will increase your skills and confidence rapidly. That the kind of work I had with DH in Huddersfield.
In all the years…
I worked the agency circuit, I never once met a DH driver. They had an office in town and ran regular adverts but, I never met a driver working for any of the major players (unless they were too embarrassed to admit it or something).
However, I did have a conversation with them on the phone and was un-impressed with the lower than average rates on offer at the time.

The clue is that you’ve admitted yourself they are prepared to pay Class 2 ( and 1 ) rates to fill van and 7.5t jobs. There is a reason for that and don’t listen to the advice to take all the zb in the hope that it will be a sure bet onto better work.It won’t because in general they won’t have any better work and in the very unlikely event that they do it’ll be the usual over subscribed lottery based on face fits favouritism.
Always sad to read drivers entering the industry based on the justified expectation that driving trucks should by default mean distance work.
When the employers have a totally opposite view that they want as many drops covering as short a distance as possible preferably avoiding the costs and regulation involved in operating trucks. That’s why they have to go to agencies.

Carryfast,
Have you read what the lad has asked?
He has only enquired what type of work he can expect to receive and has not mentioned they are paying him class 2 rate for van work.
And where does it state the lad wants distance work?
And please show me any proof that employing agency staff avoid “costs and regulation” in the operating of trucks? Because if there are any I would like to know because I can certainly tell you that the laws are the same regarding employed or agency drivers.

A hallmark Carryfast post, demonstrating a total lack of English comprehension. His overactive imagination again builds a factless scenario, in order that he can espouse his bitter denigration of all and any employer, because he couldn’t cut the mustard, as a driver.
For heaven’s sake Carryfast, seek some professional counselling.

Even the agencies aren’t silly enough to think that they can lumber class 2 and 1 drivers with van and 7.5t work and those drivers will be happy to do it for van type wages.
I’d say ‘‘can I expect any long distance drives’’ doesn’t mean that he prefers/wants local work.
Regulation and expense as in why pay for the depreciation and running costs of an 18 tonner let alone an artic and preferably why even bother with an O licence, if you can earn enough, from enough local drops, piled onto a 3.5t van.
Or at most a 7.5 tonner.
I did Grantham too peterlee in a rigid , change to another rigid & back to grantham when on agency a few years ago , really enjoyed it , but couldn’t reverse it for love nor money
Got shouted at for nearly taking out the gate post , ■■■■■■■ rigid was going in the opposite direction I wanted it too , going forwards wS fine

Happens to me too that. So used to opposite steering that when you get in a rigid again you’re all over the place

I worked the agencies for years by my own choice
I liked the variety and the fact that I was usually on more money than the regular drivers.
If you don’t mind not knowing what you may be doing the next day, filling in for a driver who hasn’t turned in or doing holiday relief then it’s fine, companies and drivers don’t expect much from an agency driver so you can usually surprise them.
I did some great jobs on the agencies and enjoyed it
