To give the new member the benefit of the doubt, he asked for recommendations, rather than available agencies. That seems to me what this forum should be used for.

Even at the age of 60 I am quite capable of using google, I was hoping for useful info from drivers actually working for agencies in the area. Thanks.

OK, I’ll give it to you straight – don’t bother! I currently live in Rugby and came back here to work last May. What was once known as ‘the golden triangle’ for work is now a wasteland. The only two recruiting last week were Hermes (parcels) and Stobarts (roping and sheeting); both have a year round recruitment drive because no one will work for them.

Xmas and summer it improves a bit, but it’s not regular. Agencies are plentiful, but they provide to the same few companies no one will work for because of the impossible workloads and physical labour now involved. Maybe other parts of the UK do have work that won’t burn you out in a matter of weeks, but the Rugby/DIRFT/ Magna Park areas aren’t among them.

Is there any reason why it must be agency and not directly employed?

I’m just curious. I live in Rugby, work in Rugby, have done for years and have never touched an agency.

Google maps search haulage firms in that area,a list will pop up,call the numbers and ask for the transport office ask what agency or if they hire direct.

Edit to add.
If you send C,V’s the HR jobsworth probably vet 90% straight into the bin, reason being they want Agency drivers which cuts out their workload keeps costs down and basically most firms have a skeleton HR department these days anyway…,call the transport office and get talking to them direct.

get a real job…agencies are all lying scumbags that only want a bum in a seat and will just lie through their teeth to see if your available to turn up for a shift that may not be what you thought.
theres masses of work available for the masses of crap work/start times, pallet network/hib deliveries/collections that are just garbage.
do yourself a favour, and load your ppe gear into the boot of your car,and keep driving round companies(smaller ones are your best bet),and just see if your face fits.#
emails,cv`s,phone calls, will just be ignored and into the bin…stick your nose in the door, and see how you get on.
your age is a bonus,not a drawback.

Roping and sheeting?

The average companies themselves is £11ph days and £12 nights. The least I was offered was £9.71 nights and that was applying directly. The problem lies elsewhere. In an ageing workforce it’s not uncommon to see guys in their mid-60s and very few are going to be capable of multi-drop unloading, or un/strapping up half a dozen times a shift. What was once a skilled driving job turned into a labourers job which even many E. Europeans now stay clear of. The companies piled on the work and eventually ended up in a situation where no one wants to do it anymore.

From ‘No handball’ (they supply a pump truck), to Oldbury-Preston (time limit of two hours), to Aldi’s acclaimed ‘60% labour and 40% driving’ (the driver is the warehouse night shift) … It’s not about driving anymore, but to squeeze every last ounce of physical labour from the employee. The hype of ‘wonderful opportunity’ and ‘single trunk run’ are the lies and deceit which keeps the hype alive, but it’s beginning to wear thin.

Yes, on ‘CV Library’ through the ‘People providers’ agency - the Stobarts agency.

I had a quick search on Indeed and there seems to be plenty of agency work paying in excess of £14 paye, in them areas.

If you search for it on there it will give you a good idea of the agency’s to ring. Decent full time jobs on there as well, Anglian Water looking for a driver paying £14.39 - carrying liquefied turd around though.

Unfortunately nothing for Grandpa on there as most jobs seem to require you to get in and out of the cab yourself, which is a bit too much work.
