One of the many AEC tractor units once operated by Scotts of Oldham

One from the family album shows the late Jos Kenworthy, who died in 1993, stood with his grandson Simon next to MBU 200E an AEC Mercury with a AV505 engine in 1967.
This particular tractor unit was one of nine that Scott’s would acquire over the following year of the then newly designed AEC which demonstrated the vast improvement in visibility given by the new tilting Ergomatic cab.
When this photograph was taken, on Lees New Road in Oldham, the brand new vehicle was on one of it’s very first runs with a trailer loaded with reels of news print from the Bowater’s Paper Mill at Ellesmere Port.

You won’t find many wagons with the Scottish thistle & the word Wembley on the front grill!

Another nice photo Chris.
I’m almost 100% certain that London-Scottish was a Nottingham based company, perhaps Spardo David can confirm it. I put a pic on here of a painting of a London-Scottish Atki 8-legger some time ago with an “AU” Nottingham reg.

hiya,
Surely must have been a special order, I was associated with AECs for a lot of
my driving years and never came across one shedded like that, could it have
been destined for another country ■■, even though the steering wheel is on the
proper side possibly a big engine and destined to be a drawbar outfit, mystery.
It does look a bit short for that though and only a day cab.
thanks harry long retired.

Hiya …just got to post this…its ex adams butter in adams foods livery been used as a shunt motor
at sturge brothers in shelton steel works. the photo belongs to bedford al who i think is alan sturge.
the aec got cut up years ago. she would have been one of the high speed AEC trunk motor with
special pistons and a high ratio diff.the yellow lorries are sturge brothers

What a shame it got cut up,i take it they could nipon a bit John

hiya mate…the AEC’s was known as high speed aec’s 70 mph crusing, they did about 5 years trunking between leek and london.
its been know for them to do 3 trips to waltham abbey in a little over 24 hours…3 change overs in leek.they was troublesome
when they got older with pistons picking up.theres a write up in a classic mag all about aec going to the trouble to get these
engines running faster for longer for motorway use.i wish i had have bought one years ago, their yard was only a stones
through from where i lived. when kerrigold took over adams, some tackle was sold for peanuts.i think that one was brf 466b
well thats what was on the number plate.

I cant imagine travelling in a mk v at 70 mph i bet that was an experience maybe if they had given them a bigger gearbox (more gears) they could have acheived their goal with a lower engine speed

Hiya …for saying how good they was…god they was basic…look how short they was for a unit…birds eye was known to have some fliers aswell
some of them 8 wheelers.you must remember the motorways was empty of traffic in the late 60’s early 70’s.
