Advise on portable tv for unit

Hi,looking for some advice,I want to buy a small portable tv/freeview with DVD about 10" screen that I can plug directly into cig lighter in truck 12/24v.i recently blew up my DVD by sticking the adaptor into the cig lighter after my old inverter had packed in,i didnt notice it was a 12v adapter and that dosent go well in a 24v socket. I tend to have a different unit each trip, therefore just looking for something easy to carry and just to plug into cig lighter.looking to spend between £150-200. Would appreciate advice on make, model where to buy. Txs. K.

Just buy a cheap tv/DVD combi in asda etc. Get an 300w inverter in maplin for£30 and jobs done. If you try buy a travel specific tv it will cost you a fortune.

I have to ask if the OP is a cab hopping driver who had to move his gear around from truck to truck, or is his regular truck the same one all the time?

He said he has a different unit every trip.

Hi,my shift rota is 6 on 2 off, so away day1 back day 3 then away day 4 back day 6, always different unit, so just looking for something easy to carry and set up with minimum fuss, sometimes use man or daf which is okay for space but sometimes use merc 2543 which as you know has limited space, so really trying to keep lugging around baggage to the minimum, have seen websites advertising tv’s, but I’m wary of their promises, that’s why Im asking forum for some advice. Maplins do various small flat screen tv;s with freeview built in …easily fit in your work bag, not the cheapest but have a look in there stores some good tv’s for mobile.

As far as I’m aware, all Alba TVs are 12v and are supplied with a 240v/12v transformer as they are sold primarily for domestic use. They aren’t supplied with a 12v lead but it would only cost pennies to make one.

Lots of the smaller lcd’s run 12 volt but have the adaptor in the lead.

Feel for you cus just done the same, 12 volt tv in 24 volt socket and smoke escaped!
Read a theory some place about smoke being essential for electrical components and when it gets out they don’t work.

Done that Three times now, once before the warranty was up so replaced with a new one for free! Now use a iPad…

Done it only today - bought a charger from Maplin for my Android tablet, plugged it into the ■■■ lighter and jumped out to open the rear doors - heard a bang as I was walking back to the cab, and got in to see the smoke escaping. Checked the label - 12v - checked the ■■■ lighter - 24v. Whoops - I used to be a sparky you know!

I use a tablet and tether to phone download catch up tv hey presto tv on tap and with 3 all you can eat data it will cost you nothing

I bought one from Maplin a couple of years ago, Nikkai brand, that works on either 12 or 24 volt.
Mine’s only a 7" screen, although I think they did a larger size as well, and from memory I paid about £70.
Only negative was the aerial it came with wasn’t great, so had to invest in a new one to get a good freeview reception.

Ok so what are the battery implications of using an inverter. I wouldn’t want to wake up with a flat battery after watching s couple of hours of tv plus lights nightheater etc.

I used to watch tv or a film for a couple of hours at night no problems. I believe a lot of trucks have a safety thing in place now where it shuts all power down when it reaches the amount of power left in the battery needed to start the truck.

Tv, sat box, lights and heater a good 3 hours of an evening for me. More than that and i run motor for half hour before bed, more important if below zero as the cold will ■■■■ the life from batteries.
You can get a low voltage alarm for peace of mind.
