I’ve started a new job and gone from skip work to Traffic Management. I’ve got a class 2 but have so far only driven 3.5 tonners and 7.5 tonners for the new company. I do not have 12D or any other qualifications yet as I’m just a trainee.
Issue being is they all seem to think that they are completely exempt from drivers hours. I have been cautious and kept a written record of my hours personally and put in my Digi card, set to out of scope when (allegedly) exempt.
Does anybody have any idea of the rules and regs or what the real life experience is of this type of work as I don’t want to rock the boat, but also stay on the right side of the law.
I’ve asked other drivers, but they don’t seem to give a toss and are working silly hours. Any help much appreciated.
No idea what traffic management is.
But I had an interview once. As road sweeper. They wanted me work Mon to Fri on building sites then every Saturday doing roads.
I questioned this was told roadsweepres are tacho exempt can work as many hours as you like…
In other words they don’t keep accurate paperwork accounts they do paperwork to make it look legal
I politely turned them down
Same as dustbin there tacho expemt as well
Thanks for the reply. Traffic Management is just a posh word for road works. We put down lane closures, contraflows, road closures, cones, signs, temporary traffic lights etc. So I think it falls under road construction.
I’ve had this conversation with several people over the years, and bottom line is that yes, they do all act as if they are exempt from all the various regulations, but they are not: It’s simply a case of the authorities (seemingly collectively) choosing not to try to enforce the rules.
As long as you’re in this sector, just go with it, but if/when you move into another sector, just remember that all your previous working practices weren’t actually legal.
It beggars belief that there are those within that sector who think there’s nothing wrong with working constant 12 hour shifts with not even one day off per week, but
