Hi Fellas
Is it possible to pay for and attend an ADR exam, without paying for and attending the course?
I still have all these materials from an ADR course I attended 7 years ago, so I would just study it all again and pay for and attend an exam only, saving time and money on attending the course.
If this option is not available, are there any decent online ADR courses being offered (via Zoom?)
Thanks
There probably is an option out there to do just that if you search enough I’d imagine.
The big question though is why? I read that you still have your bits and bobs from a seven year old course, which is fine to an extent. Legislation is fluid and constantly is changed and updated, so perhaps what was correct 7 years ago is no longer so. I’d also imagine that the cost saving would also be negligible too.
Good luck anyway.

If I am not mistaken, the exam costs around £100, while a course around £600 +, with exam fee top of it.
Another reason, is that to attend the course, I would have to sacrifice a few days of my holidays yearly allowance, but when studying by myself, I could study in my spare time, days off, and take a few weeks ( depending of how much time I have available to go through the booklet) to get prepared, in my spare time.
Thanks

Hi internetfan,
I’m afraid that you have to attend and ADR course, either in person, or by Zoom, but either way up you’d still have to go to an approved provider to take the exams.

Sorry but you’d need to have up to date study materials because the big ADR books are completely reprinted and republished every two years, so your 7yr old materials are rather out of date.

It is still possible to take an ADR course by Zoom as we did during the COVID time, but I’m not aware of who might offer an ADR course by Zoom right now.
Even if you can find such a course, you have to be aware that you must attend the provider’s premises in person to sit the exams, so you’d need to bear the mileage in mind.
Another thing that you might consider… Attendance on an ADR course can get you up to 28hrs of DCPC depending on which ADR modules you decide to take.
If you’re booking your own course directly with an ADR provider, please ask whether VAT is included in what they’ve quoted you, as well as being aware that you’d need to address the topic of DCPC at the same time.
Thanks dieseldave for detailed reply.
I couldn’t find any online that would let me sit the exam only, it looks like I need to attend the course as well.

I could have saved you the trouble if I’d spotted your post earlier.
Post up if you find difficulty in finding an ADR course provider, then I’ll give you some options if you tell me roughly whereabouts in the country you are, as well as how far you’re prepared to travel (round trip) to attend each day.
If you take the normal course (without tanks) you’ll need four return trips, if you’re taking a normal course and the tanks module, then you’ll need five return trips.
Hi dieseldave
I have ADR course providers in my area covered, I have found them via this link:
adrlicence.co.uk/
Might be useful for others
Thanks

Hi internetfan,
I’ve had a look at the link and make a couple of observations:
1.) It’s not an official site.
2.) There are a number of inaccuracies on the various tabs on the site, which I don’t have time to discuss or explain.
The official SQA site for ADR driver training in the UK is here:
There are many links that can be followed, including the official list of SQA approved ADR training course providers.
This should help people who wish to obtain correct info and save them from wasting their own time ‘googling’ inaccurate or out of date info.
I hope this helps everybody.
Hi Dave
As far as I can see there is only one company doing these courses online, via Zoom , called Enterprise Transport Training.
What’s your take on them, are they legit, and do they privide a good training?
I know they do them online, over 4 days and on the 5th day you go to one of the exam centres , to do an exam.
Any other companies providing online based ADR courses out there?
Thanks

Hi internetfan,
I’ve had a look at the list of approved ADR providers and I can tell you that Enterprise Transport Training are legit… and are authorised to offer remote ADR courses.
Although I’ve worked for a number of ADR providers over my 20yrs in that industry, I’ve never worked for Enterprise so I couldn’t comment on whether they provide good training. Apart from the fact that they ARE approved by SQA.

If you click this link:
…then look on the right hand side (in downloads) for a link that says “approved training providers” then you can download an .xls spreadsheet that will give you the answer you’re looking for in column “B.”
The same list will also tell you whether a provider is authorised to offer Classes 1 and/or 7, if you’re interested in either/both of those.
When dealing with any provider, I advise that you ask about:
This will avoid nasty surprises and let you compare like-for-like.
Good luck with your efforts!!
dumb question time… i have adr with basic packages it expires in august 2025. I assume that if i wished i could do the tanker module now however if would expire when my current one does. However, if i waited 2 years and did a refresher course for the packages can i do the full tanks then or would i still need to do a refresher course. Either way would i be expected to know how to operate a tanker?

It’s not a dumb question at all, it’s actually an FAQ.

You’re correct.
If you add anything to an existing ADR licence, the expiry will still be on the original date.
Actually, it’s the date of expiry of the Core module that determines this.

It’s even better than that…
You can sit an initial course as a refresher candidate AND add your additional tanks module at the same time.
To do this, you must be in the last year of your validity, but NOT within the last six weeks before the expiry date.
If you can fit within that time-window, any unexpired portion of your old Card will be added to the five years validity of the new Card, so you won’t lose a single day of validity.
A truly refresher course exists, but I always advise people that it is to be completed in approx half of the original time because of ‘assumed’ knowledge. In other words, the course will come at you twice as quick as normal!!
By the way, if you want to add a module, you can’t achieve that if you sit a refresher course because a (proper) refresher course can only refresh the modules on the Card in your hand when you take the course.
It is ALWAYS better to sit an initial course as a refresher candidate, but you’d need to make sure that the instructor (and their office staff) know your wishes. If you take this option, you need to check the modules and expiry date on your new Card as soon as you get it. You should immediately inform the provider if your new Card doesn’t meet what you’ve booked for.
