Adr class 3 plates?

Hello everyone, just a quick question does anyone know where I can get any information on the plates that need to be used for flammable liquids (Packages). I’ve had my adr for 5 years in august but have never used it so its been as while! I did it when I was 17 in the army and now my company want me to deliver some pallets with flammables on all this week and next week on a rigid! Any help much appreciated, I know I have to have diff extinguishers & the correct PPE just need some information to scratch up on it cheers alot!

Diesel Dave will be along in a moment with a few short questions. Normally the consignor will issue the placards (diamonds) with the documents and instructions in writing, while the lorry should be equipped with 2 kemler boards (orange plate) just because it is flammable liquid, you may not need any markings, dependant on the answers Dave gets from you. It depends how it is packaged

Cheers pal.

Hi Williams9881,

As already mentioned, the answer to your question depends on the size/type of packages, plus how many of the packages are going to be loaded per trip.
I also need to know the UN number, proper shipping name (PSN) and the Packing Group (PG) please.

If your journey is by road only, the only answer I can give you for sure right now is that UN Class 3 placards (diamonds) will NOT be needed.

Sorry I can’t be more specific, but in order to give you accurate info, I do need the info I’ve asked for please.
Once I know that, we’ll get you sorted.

Well this thread answers a question I wondered! The army do use/have ADR. Only wondered as I got lumbered for 2 hours of the A1 today with a army truck infront/behind! It had a large ie 500ltr plus tank onboard with a home made placard. A4 piece of paper with flamable sign not in correct size and big fat UN number 1223 (kerosene)
The truck didnt have orange plates fitted never mind dispalyed, seemed a bit iffy with the home made label!

So the curious question.

Do VOSA ever examine army road going trucks?

Hi Imp,

CDG 2009 Reg.12(1) allows The Secretary of State for Defence to issue an Authorisation to the armed forces that allows them to disregard ADR in certain circumstances if they need to “for operational, training or security reasons related to the role of the armed forces.”

Sometimes, a thing that looks like a “tank,” might actually be a package!!

I question the wisdom of fitting a reflective plate (and brackets  ) designed to withstand a fire for 15 minutes on a camouflaged lorry

Quite right too Malc, cos it might defeat the object of the camouflage!!

The Secretary of State for Defence has a very broadly written permission in CDG 2009 to change pretty much anything in ADR for the military if he thinks he needs to. All he needs to do then is to say that it’s for ‘operational reasons.’

I did think there must of been some sort of dispensation. Oh yeah big orange plate on army truck would look a little odd and in battlefield it would errr be rather irrelivent, but on normal road use in uk should adhere to same rules as everyone else, on a side note ive seen some shoddy driving lately from army trucks. Had one pull out of Warcup ranges recently forcing me to test the stopping distance of my truck, it was 5ft short of hitting him! So guess it was plenty LOL

Cheers for the answer mate, I don’t know the PSN or PG until I get there but I am only on roads. Hopefully not need but I’m sure they mentioned something about it being paint as its for either toyota/honda. Will find out in the morning anyway and post up how I get on.

PS,
How do I go about doing a course for tankers? I’ve got 1,2,3 packages but 1,2,3 are crossed out in tanks on my adr? I thought when I did the course a few years ago that’s what I was doing it for to deliver Fuel in tanks for tanks lol, and obviously bullets and bombs in packages. Cheers anyway

Hi mate,

Paint has about four different UN numbers in ADR, then there are more possible variations due to which PG you’re being asked to carry, so I’m afraid we’re stumped for now.

A course for tankers is easy to get sorted, cos you just contact any ADR training provider and ask to book on the next tanker course.

I see from your OP that you have very little time left on your present ADR certificate, so my advice is that you can start shopping around for an ADR provider, sit an initial course (as a refresher candidate) then any unexpired portion of your present ADR certificate will be added to your new ADR certificate, then just tack the tanker module on the end and you’ll be good to go.

The explosives module will probably be slightly trickier to get sorted, cos due to it being specialised, not all ADR providers offer it.

A couple of years ago I was overtaken by three army landrovers with trailers going at a considerable lick. At that time the limit for trailers was 50mph.

A few miles up the road they were parked up on the hard shoulder exchanging pleasantries with a couple of guys in a jam sandwich.

I assumed that they were stopped for speeding and I think they were Terries but surely even the regulars have to obey the speed limits. They usually stick to 50mph anyway.

If also needing hours for your driver cpc then it might be worth paying a bit extra for at least 21 hours of dcpc but you will need to check that the course is dcpc approved - most seem to be these days

Didn’t have to use any diamonds. Just used the back and front orange boards. Delivered paint of some sort and box flammable stuff. Was multidrop and I forgot how much I hate driving puddle jumpers. Went from nyk (a38) to Manchester, Stockport, Leeds, Barnsley, Sheffield, Derby & then back to the yard. 11 Hour shift atleast! Back in at half 7 in the morning I will write down the numbers and let you know exactly what it is.

Army drivers are a law unto themselves

The devil is in the detail. NYK are now to be known as Yusen Logistics. I would prefer to see the name of Atkins back :stuck_out_tongue:
