First why such a low rate, second who accept this loads for Ad-hoc? What if no re loads at Grimsby and you travel empty to next place, then rates go under 1.40 or less…

They offer that rate because they know that if you don’t accept the job someone else will do it for that rate. It’s called supply and demand. It’s a back-load rate and refrigerated loads from Scotland to the south are very difficult to source. If you don’t have your own customers who you work directly for and negotiate the rates with, then back-load rates are what you will have to accept.

Flipy flops do that load regular, normally thro Jigsaw, out loads from faversham, Bradford, Barnsley, and Enfield. I think the ee get €1,
I requested example loads from Jigsaw, and its around 1.60 1.80 very poor indeed.
Apart from two, DFDS has better rates though.
Wishing one day UK cabotage rules follow as in Switzerland, deliver import and only load for an export, and minimum wage for foreign drivers as what Norway take some serious actions… ( dreaming ? )

So did you decide what unit you were getting? Did you go with the Iveco?

Still not decided, as I’m still waiting o licence result.

We can all dream, but dont plan on that anytime soon. We are meant to become "more competitive". I.E. getting everything cheaper. Cant see how any actions resulting in increasing haulage rates will do that.
The rates out of Scotland are poor unless you have a contract coming south purely because there’s a lot more product going up than coming down.
Most people would price the northbound job to cover running south empty. Then if you can be arsed and or are lucky enough to find a back load south, at least the pittance is better than nothing.
I used to sub for Gist on a clearing house basis. I packed that up in 2015 after trying to keep the subbies rates up to where they should be, but having my margins slashed due to the likes of Kingbrooke etc just carving the rates up. (other hauliers were available too)
I then had a fall out with Gist cause their newish national sub contractor manager at that time, knew the new MD at Clan and decided to give them all the work I was doing, and paying them less than I was paying them? Wouldn’t have happened with the old school guys at Clan cause we all knew we didn’t have to stand on each others toes to all benefit in some way, I think we used to call that loyalty?
Gist are full of ex graduates who route plan with software and I would think very few have ever stepped foot in a motor. So its all about figures and targets and less about the reality of what it takes to run a motor. But while there are people out there doing the work for rates that would still be relevant 15 years ago, they’ll keep giving the work out at that.
Mind you, £450 from ■■■■■■■■■■■ to Grimsby aint too sad to get you out of scotch with a fridge, if you got the right money to go up in the first place. At least it gets you back in the game and its not down to Faversham, Thatcham or Hemel…then it would be a proper p** take.
