ABS warning and VOSA

I read somewhere that VOSA will issue a prohibition if you have a yellow ABS warning illuminated unless you can prove that it wasn’t on at the start of the journey in which case they will just issue an inspection notice. Is this true and if so how the hell can you prove that?

If your stopped then turn your ignition off b4 they get to you. Abs faults only stay on after the vehicle has set off at usually over 10mph . However. They usef to be able to give u 3 points on your license if found to have abs fault but thats been stopped now

ABS1 light comes on. You stop, check the brake system, make a note of the time and mileage when you stopped and advise your transport office. On return to base, defect it for the garage to check. Not sure if this holds for the ABS light though…

Never heard this, but the time and frequency of the fault code will be logged into some ECU or other that can be read with (usually) manufacturer’s plug in diagnostics. You can’t prove it,but they might,if they have the knowledge and equipment to interrogate every truck make.Quite doubtful, but that’s only my opinion.

and does this apply to a trailer ABS warning as well as a unit ABS warning? 'cos we get no end of trailer ABS warnings on our Daf CFs. :frowning:

As sarge said , we have just had this problem and the trailer was vor’d , if you go out on the road knowingly of the abs fault you will receive a pg9 , if it happens on the road as said note mileage and time also transport office and have problem rectified at first possible place e.g. not at the side of a motorway as its only a yellow light

funny you day daf cf as thats what we had , but it turned out to be the trailer at fault

have a look

If youve done your walk round/defect checks before starting and got a written record of it being OK, surely it would be down to vosa to prove it was on before you started not you to prove it was off. As the sarge says make a note if it comes on once youve left.

The fact that the warning light is on doesn’t prove there is a defect. I have driven an Actros or two and you would spend more of your day out of the cab if you stopped and checked every fault that came up on the dash, lights, indicators,ABS etc.

There also appears to be a compatability issue with new units and older trailers (5 years old). As has been mentioned, if there is a genuine fault then it should be recorded on the on-board computer and unless it is, then there is no offence.
