A75

Lots of people on here never drove the “75” - so if you haven’t been on it shut up and ■■■■ off .
But for all the V*8 monkeys driving it now - you never had it so good .villages bypassed and a nice shiney dual carriageway coming out of Dumfries heading for Newton Stewart . Anyone here remember "the Glen " before it was straightened out - try meeting a boat load of lorries flat to the mat heading south and you trying to get up the glen for a boat - boys regularly lost buckles off curtainsiders and mirrors eithe against the rock or on the lorries you were meeting .
Of course you all know the fastest person down the 75 was a woman with a load of swinging beef - 2 hours from boat to the hole in the wall at the 74 . 143 and Gray and Adams trailer.

them days a firm from moffat yellow volvos f56 pulling for curries dfs cant remember their name was almost gone at the bridge near the cheese company lockerbie wrong side of road on the bridge going like the clappers no traffic lights them days

Aye Jimmy in the early 70s coming down one morning at the Howies corner here’s an Irish gentleman never made it round it but managed about half way across the field he must have had a fair walk back to the road.Gets out the other end o Annan and half way to the railway bridge looks to the right and here’s a back axle lying on the railway and a train stopped a bit further up well from there to the bridge was littered with the rest o the unit it was the same firm as the one at howies it went right down onto the line and luckily he got out before the train made a neat job of uncoupling it the trailer was left undamaged.
There was a third one he was stopped by the police at Carlisle area. They had been at Castle Douglas going to park up went on to the drink back to the motors and decided to take off doon the road and the rest is history I canny mind the name o the firm but it was a costly job anyway. Eddie.

The ‘skew brig’ just before Eastriggs…I was going to work one morning and there was a P&O artic over the edge with the cab resting on the railway line (summer 89) full load of coca cola on its back, my fridge was full with coca cola for weeks after that, There is still scrape marks in the road on the dornock side of the bridge from another artic cowpin…Happy days…

Having read this topic I’m rather glad that despite driving an Irish truck I’ve never been down the A75. I don’t think I could keep up with the big tang boys in their dealer boots, checked shirts and wallet on a chain.

Yep! I’d never heard of tang before that thread. I had of course seen them but didn’t realise they had a name!

Drove it a few times but in a car , albeit I did have a HGV licence then (resident battalion in Ireland at the time early 90’s and had my car over the water) It was always early hours too and half asleep and as fast as you dare so I guess it counts as truck driving - maybe

ROG:

i aint pulling over for anyone…

How would you, and the huge queue behind you, feel if you had to sit behind a 25 mph tractor for miles on end as it went passed many safe stopping places ?

I commend those that do not go above the legal limit but road safety comes first so if there is a huge queue behind then the reasonable thing to do for safety is to pull out the way for 30 seconds.

I know the queue is not the FAULT of those keeping to the limits but those that set such stupid limits on roads where LGVs could safely go quicker and the driver may also have that view but if the safety of other road users is being compromised due to frustration then the good driver takes safe, legal measures to rectify it.

What about if I’m fully loaded @ 44t and get a fuel bonus?

If I pull out of the way, by time I’m back upto 40, I’ve got another queue of the same size behind me and lost 10 litres of fuel for ■■■■ all.

I’ll sit inside the solid white line on the straight bits to allow people to see round and pass, I’ll indicate if I can see it’s clear for a while and I’ll stick to 40 in the duals to let people pass, but I’m not going to pull over.

Wasting your time with them Wayne, most of them that drive that road think its ok to drive like a ■■■■. You won’t convince them otherwise. I’ve had some very near misses on that road. Best place for most of them is the hedges where they end up.
