moving over when you have a large queue behind you is the right thing to do!!!

No it isn’t.

With a limiter set at 52, it doesn’t matter what speed I travel at, there will always be a large queue behind me and I ain’t diving into every layby like a frightened schoolgirl just to appease some [zb] in a car or a hero in a truck.
Btw, travelling from dumfries to gretna at 40 takes only 3 mins longer than sitting at 56.

Totally not true at all.

EG: A typical journey takes me 45 minutes in a car to get from just after Dumfries to Carlisle. We got held up in a queue by a 40 mph-er from Collin to Gretna the other week and this journey added exactly 20 minutes extra to this time.

Your 3 minutes less doesn’t even add up mathematically as already stated so no idea where you get this figure from?

Your right, no matter what speed you do you will always get someone behind you but when someone is clearly causing massive hold ups at 40, the right thing to do is move over. I’d imagine you’d expect a tractor to move over where possible. Every vehicle should do the same!

Where are you getting your figures from?

At the end of the collin bypass is this sign…

So travelling at 29 miles per hour it will take one hour to reach carlisle. You say you were travelling at 40mph and yet it took you 1 hour and 5 minutes. I think you’re telling porkies.

If you can’t manage to find a suitable overtaking place within the 19 miles to gretna, (which includes the Kinmount)…you are either driving a crap car or you are a crap driver.

Which is it?

ajt:
I’d imagine you’d expect a tractor to move over where possible. Every vehicle should do the same!

No…I have no expectations save that the tractor driver is able to get on with his job and I will overtake at a safe and suitable location.

As I said earlier, if you want to be a hero…on you go, I’m not stopping you.

With all this moaning would it not be more easier for the tossers holding everybody back to just pull into a layby and let the traffic flow go on? Why on earth people would want anyone stuck on there @ss pushing them on or have 1-20 lorries + cars causing a huge cue behind them is beyond me… Id actually feel embaressed f I was holding a cue of traffic back? But hey ho there are arrogant [zb] that quite freely drive these roads nowadays thinking there doing no wrong.

Snooker, Pool, or Billiards?

truckerspal wat are we talking about here trucking or scottishcruisers english and grammer ability.

I find travelling to/from Gretna to the Lockerbie road roundabout averages 30mins + say 10 to J44 would leaves 25 mins to get through Carlisle which can be good going some days :imp: :imp:

My journey didn’t start at Collin. I said i got held up from Collin. A journey which takes 45 minutes in total took a extra 20 minutes to complete. Your also forgetting a queue of traffic never flows at an exact speed due to people braking and speeding up, gradients etc etc, infact there was a cycle event which held us up at one point iirc called Mull to Hull.

As for overtaking, slightly hard when your not driving at the time and infront was 4 lorries followed by approx 8 or so cars all bunched up. Only one tanker behind the lead vehicle managed to get past.

If you drive this road regular you will know fine well what its like to be behind a 40mph-er so don’t come the ‘’ everyone else should do this number’’ Moving over showing manors and courtesy costs nothing

For the record, the difference between 40 and 56mph, constant speed over 19 miles, is roughly 8.5 minutes not 3

Manners and courtesy etc etc…the lorry driver is doing his legal speed limit :unamused: :unamused: If I can maintain that speed limit I’ll stay as I am, if I’m heavy and hold up on corners /hills etc then I’ll pull over.

I didn’t set the limits so don’t have a go if I hold you up - write to your MP…or put up with it.

Or you could do what the highway code says to do, pull over, just cos your doing the legal limit it doesnt mean that you aint causing a problem, you obviously aint in a rush so have a break have a kit… ehh just pull over  your hourly paid so whats the issue? unless you ■■■■■ gets excited at the fact that you have 458 vehicles behind you then I cant really see an issue.

ajt:

Ahhh I see…passing the buck!
So as you were being driven in a crap car by a crap driver, why should the truck in front jump out of their way, just because of their overall crapness behind the wheel?

ajt:

Manors? Is that a stately manor?

As you mentioned courtesy…do you barge other people out of the way in other queues? Such as a queue at the supermarket, shops or even a pub? I bet you don’t.

But then we are back to my point:

Even a good driver with good car can’t do much if the lorries go bumper to bumper.

I recon that is even more important: if the first lorry pulls over, the rest will keep going, so that not much help for car drivers.

If they leave the gaps between them, even poor driver can overtake one lorry at the time - there is plenty of stretch bits on A75.

Also, from yesterday:
Why truckers doing 40 do not use main beam lights?

I know they see what they need to, but if I am about to overtake them, I would like to know what’s ahead, so they should use main beam to let ME see if I can do it if they don’t want me to dazzle them with my main beam before I start overtaking.

Highway code doesn’t say ANYWHERE that if you are doing the legal speed limit to pull over!!! Hourly paid doesn’t enter in to it either. The limit is the limit!!

What the hell has my ■■■■■ got to do with anything :open_mouth: :open_mouth: are you some type of perv :unamused:

On certain roads I will pull over out of courtesy… A17/A15 but I really don’t have to.

Highway code says “Do not hold up a long queue of traffic, especially if you are driving a large or slow-moving vehicle. Check your mirrors frequently, and if necessary, pull in where it is safe and let traffic pass”

Obviously you have some issues as you have taken the ■■■■■ comment in the wrong context.

Large vehicle ok…but doing the speed limit isn’t holding anyone up - I didn’t set the limits :unamused: :unamused:

ajt:
For the record, the difference between 40 and 56mph, constant speed over 19 miles, is roughly 8.5 minutes not 3

56 mph over 19 miles = 17.73 mins (56 divided by 60 times 19)
40 mph over 19 mins = 12.66 mins (40 divided by 60 times 19)
difference of 5.07 mins

UNLESS my maths is out

It’s all very well saying it only takes 5 minutes or whatever between Dumfries to Gretna, but that is only a fraction of the length of the road. It’s got to be a minimum of 1 hour longer to drive at 40 mph between Gretna and Stranraer. Minutes my arse.

Do you actually drive a lorry?
Doing 38mph holds up everyone, I have been in plenty of tailbacks caused by the ‘im doing the speed limit so f-you brigade’, just because you are doing the legal speed doesnt mean you aint causing a problem. Tractors manage to pull over and they are doing under the legal speed limit, whats your excuse?

Speed limits the speed limit fella. Depends on the work im doing but theres sometimes i really enjoy the open road in front when doing 40 and the masive que behind. Best roads for causing total mayhem legaly like this is the A9 and A69. Suits an agency shift were your wanting to string it out anyway. If i get some ■■■■■■ sitting in my mirror tailgating, that really gets my rocks off.

That is not a legal requirement but obeying the speed limit for your vehicle is, so that over-rules 169.

And if you’re going to start quoting The Highway Code, let’s start with Rule 147.

direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTr … /DG_070309

You should not allow yourself to become agitated or involved if someone is behaving badly on the road. Pull over, calm down and, when you feel relaxed, continue your journey.

As it’s the following drivers who are getting their knickers in a twist…it should be them that’s pulling into layby’s so they can calm down a bit.

I dont get my knickers in a twist, I am happy to hold back if a driver is doing 38mph, would just prefer it if they pulled over now and again, i always hold back on a straight and let people past if i have a queue behind me, we are all in the same profession so why not help out your fellow drivers if you can see they are going faster? its not ■■■■■■■ up your day is it but its helping another driver out
