A1[M] North & A69 West according to another discussion I saw this morning on FB
If you’re coming from the south then come off A1M at next junction after Scotch Corner, the junction for Barton truckstop. Follow B road to Pearcebridge so turn left at end of sliproad if heading north. Turn left onto A67 into Barnard Castle then turn left at the bandstand (bad camber). Keep on going down that road for a mile and you’ll see a HGV route sign telling you to turn right to go back to A66. Turn down there. It’s a crappy little road and there’s a single track bridge on a S bend at the bottom of a hill with traffic lights on and it’s tight bends to turn on and off the bridge. If you can see something coming the other way as you approach the lights hang back to give them plenty of room to clear the corner. Brings you out on the A66 at the end of the second dual carriageway.

Very good post. Man who knows the roads. Why take a 20 mile diversion when you can cut through the wee roads yonder.
When they were doing the Leeming Bar to Scotch Corner motorway upgrade I don’t think there’s a route we didn’t try around there. Official diversion for that was A19 all the way up past Middlesboro to Billingham then A689 round bottom of Sedgefield back onto the A1 and then south to Scotch Corner. Used to go Thirsk, Northallerton, Darlington then head back south. If we’d have gone the official route we’d have only been able to do two Lockerbie swaps a week as we’d run into a 10hr. Quite a few others cottoned onto it to the point that the locals in Northallerton complained to their MP as on a night it would just be a “Convoy” type dash of night trunkers and parcel network motors running up the A168 and A167.

Conor, what are the road numbers for this route ?, I gave your route to a mate who goes over the A66 quite a bit & he made a right hash of it last night, claiming various reasons for his “tour” …is it the B6277 coming into/out of B.C. back to the A66 ?
