Another close call… surely it can’t cost that much to A lower the road or B raise the bridge… Will surely save money in the long run when lorry’s aren’t smacking in to it…

So standards have dropped amongst us so much that it has got to the point where drivers can not observe road signs anymore, or even manage without sat navs.
So you think the answer and obvious remedy is to heighten bridges and/or lower the road under them…Seriously??
I mean, ffs !!:
loads of signs warning ‘Low Bridge’ on all approaches.got to be really thick to hit that one

Local businesses moaning about loss of revenue each time it’s closed.
Right yes drivers fault each and every time. How you can miss a sign saying ‘Over height Vehicle’ I’ll never know.
But another solution would be for businesses and the council to chip in and lower the road as mentioned above.

That happens there every day .

Yep obviously certain drivers are not reading signs. Minds elsewhere or not, Third most struck bridge in the country up one of the most used A roads if network rail are acknowledging the issue then something ought to be done. Any sings miles back for an alternative route to a driver not familiar with the road or just plonk one once your on top of the bridge…■■
That looks like a double decker…so maybe the driver hasnt pulled one of those, yet has used that route, mind you, the height limits are there to see…maybe we should revert ton a europe wide height of 4m…that way theres no mix ups, although i think some drivers will still try and get under a 3m one…ha ha
I’m sure that bridge has been there for bloody years if it’s the one I’m thinking of.
Is it just a recent phenomenon in the last 10 yrs or so, that it has been hit numerous times ?
I would put in on in a bookies in a double with Newcastle going up next season that it is, but maybe someone will prove me wrong.
I am sure the older drivers will know what I am getting at here. :

One truck every year iirc.
Big flashing signs stating ‘Over height Vehicle turn back’ before the roundabout.
Just think mate if they kept off their phones they’d see the sign [emoji23] [emoji23] [emoji23]

Definitely cheaper than altering the bridge or road, and it would avoid any accidents with reversing trucks trying to turn.
As for the idiots, if you had machine gun emplacements on the bridge the feckless bastds would still manage to get through and hit it.

The reasons why the bridge cannot be raised or the road lowered (without HUGE costs) are mentioned in the report.

Yep saw that but come on define huge costs. Just watched the programme about the 25… what was it 4 million just for a slab of steel for a bridge!?

There are roundabouts just a few hundred yards either side of the bridge, so no issues with turning round. There are electronic overheight warning signs on the approaches too (on both the A5 and A47 - before the roundabouts) and god only knows how many warning signs on all the approach roads from a couple of miles out. Doesn’t stop the steering wheel attendants either ploughing into it or (as in the most recent case) having to reverse back when (finally) the penny dropped that yes, it’s a low bridge and no, that lorry isn’t going to pass under it. This really isn’t a case of drivers missing a sign - they have failed to spot possibly half a dozen of the buggers.
They should have their vocational licences confiscated on the spot as they are clearly unfit to hold one.

They already have them. Doesn’t avoid the reversing incidents, as the latest example clearly demonstrates…
