A46 Lifecycle Extension North of Leicester

Morning All,

A heads up with regards to the replacement of the concrete part of the A46 to the North of Leicester between the A607 and the A606

NOTIFICATION OF ESSENTIAL WORKS
A46 Lifecycle Extension Work (LEW) scheme between Six Hills and Widmerpool
I’m writing to inform you that we’ll be carrying out essential works to the A46
carriageway between Six Hills and Widmerpool.
This work will extend the life of the existing carriageway whilst minimising future
unplanned interventions. Once completed, all road users will benefit from improved
road safety. The scheme involves replacing concrete sections, reconstructing and
sealing the joints between them, localised patch repairs, resurfacing and reinstating
road markings and studs.
When will the work take place?
Work is due to start on 25th September 2023 and is scheduled for completion by the
end of March 2024.
Please note that all our planned roadworks may be subject to change due to weather
conditions or unforeseen circumstances.
How will the work affect traffic?
To keep our programme for these works as short as possible and to minimise
disruption to the local community, residents, businesses and road users, we’ll work as
follows:
• 24 hours a day, 7 days per week using contraflow split into 6 phases.
• Full overnight closures of the A46 and slip roads at the beginning of the work
and throughout when we switch contraflow sections.
• Local accesses located within a contraflow section will be maintained via an
escorting system.
• Diversion route via A606/A607 for non-HGVs to relieve pressure on the
network.

  1. The work is divided into 6 Phases with the first two directly affecting the slip roads on and off the A46 at Six Hills. It is estimated that each Phase will last roughly 4-5 weeks.

  2. The work will start on 25 September and, for the initial period, will involve installing average speed cameras, preparing for contraflow working and changes to barriers etc.

  3. The initial period will last around 3 weeks and the A46 will be closed nightly between 8pm and 6am.

  4. At night, when the A46 is closed, northbound traffic will be forced to leave the A46 at the junction with the A607 (the first junction north of the Hobby Horse roundabout).

  5. All northbound slip roads from the A607 to the Widmerpool (Nottingham) junction will be closed - some continuously throughout the duration of the work.

  6. At night, southbound traffic will be forced to leave the A46 at the junction with the A606 - Nottingham to Melton Road.

  7. I do not yet have a clear answer as to whether it will be possible to join the A46 southbound at Six Hills whilst the night work is going on. Please do not assume this will be open.

  8. At some stage during the initial period, a day and night-time contraflow will commence. This will start at Six Hills for traffic travelling north.

  9. I understand there will be no access northbound onto the A46 at Six Hills during Phases 1 and 2 of the project - a period of approximately eight weeks.

  10. There will be several further night closures of the A46 (8pm-6am) as the work moves from one phase to the next. This is to allow time to set up a changed contraflow.

  11. Throughout each day, the A46 will be open but with a contraflow. It is “inevitable” (their words) that there will be significant tailbacks south of Six Hills.

  12. At night, where possible, the A46 will be open but with a contraflow. However there will also be complete closures and some may be at very short notice. Closures will be inevitable at the end of each Phase.

That’s gonna make…

For some spicy detours innit.

A46 is what we use when the A1 or M1 is closed to hop between the two.

If it’s closed…

Where I think it’s gonna be closed, then running south come off at Bingham on the A52, run south round Nottingham, left onto the A453 past the power station at Ratcliffe to rejoin the M1.

What’s the betting we get some DD pallet night shift drivers wedged down some ickle country lanes?

Got stuck in that m1 south closure nonsense last Monday.
Left the yard at 2100 and didn’t clear Leicester forest till 0030.

Where you Think it’s going to be closed , then you go on about pallet drivers ending up on wrong roads , you couldn’t make it up some times on here

The A606/A607 diversion is via Melton Mowbray and National Highways have had a stall on the last couple of market days in the town to highlight the works going on. Bit more info about it from the local rag…

Ah, confusion already, good old Highways Agency.

Perhaps I should have just edited it myself - the official diversion for HGVs will be via A606 to Melton Mowbray and A607 back to the A46. Like yourhavingalarf suggested if you’re trying to get from A46 to M1 coming off at Saxondale Island onto the A52 may be better option. There’s still scope for ■■■■ ups for the car sat-nav wallahs - there’s a fairly high possibility that the sat-nav will try and route you through some tasty country lanes and tight-arsed villages and 7.5t limits

On a slightly different note but same area, planning permission has been granted for a controversial ‘motorway style’ service station on the side of the A606 near Melton Mowbray. The proposed ‘Hickling Services’ would be run by Welcome Break Members of the planning committee at Rushcliffe Borough Council last week heard concerns from residents and local councillors, including ward representative Tina Combellack, stating fears about traffic with a proposed 15 HGVs being able to park up there for the night, and parking provision for 57 cars, plus worries over increased litter being left around the area.

It’s almost…

Guaranteed innit?

Interesting about the proposed services. The locals are absolutely correct in their worries. No one’s told them how fragrant the area will become in the summer months have they.
