Can anyone point me at the old transport caffs of the A4? Particularly looking for exact locations. TIA Wolfie
A few i can remember are The Ridgeway between Beckhampton and Marlborough.
Golden Arrow between Marlborough and Hungerford, Macs nr Theale. Jocks and The Riverside(still going)Colnbrook. There was one at Cherhill nr Calne but i cant remember the name of it
The Cafe on the A4 Cherhill I used every day when we were running ISR synthetic rubber to an old airfield at Yatesbury, when we tipped our second load of the day from Fawley four of us had tea and munchies there, then two would go and load for the next day and me and my driver went and filled up as they only loaded two at a time, then when we got there the others had pulled out of the shed and we went in, just a bit of cooperation between drivers, helped each other fold sheets as well good on a windy day. £72 a load up times too and one load of salt back £35 not bad in the late 70’s and diesel was 72P a gallon.
Locations wise the Golden Arrow was where Palm Indian restaurant is now (SN8 3JT)
I don’t remember the Ridgeway Cafe, though did speak to someone at work this afternoon about it, he reconed there is a bungalow there still / now.
There is a Cafe spot in Cherill that has just gone back to being a cafe, now called The Dandy Highwayman SN11 8UU, is that the same spot as the old cafe?
Having a look now I am hone and at the PC, was this an old cafe half way up the hill out of Cherill?
Can anyone tell me EXACTLY where the Ridgeway stood? I know it was on the right coming from Marlborough somewhere in the Overton Hill/West Kennet area. Cheers
Midway between West Kennett and West Overton. On google maps, the site is marked as The Ridgeway national trail/ Five round burrows. Hope this helps.
I think that is the same spot and the old cafe was called The White Horse
On google maps now I see a little bit of tarmac opposite the layby that perhaps is a residual from the old access, if the track on the right of the aerial photo is the main ridgeway trail.
Brilliant thanks. Do you know where this photo came from?
I “borrowed” it from Transport cafes past and present
I can’t find Transport Cafes Past and Present? Is it a thread?
