Been up & down Sutton bank a few times over the years in various vehicles can be a little interesting at times
Remember going up there in a 7.5 a few years back after it had been snowing empty to load at the Industrial est that was a wee bit interesting as was early hr of mor
Been up and down loads of times in various wagons loaded unloaded the normal thing is getting stuck behind a car that has stalled and messing up my descent up the bloody thing but when your use it a lot it’s not bad
In bad whether I avoid it I’ve seen a few tankers get stuck and a steady Eddie stuck up there one Eddie stobart driver ha to reverse about 2 miles to get turned round police wasn’t impressed.
I live a few miles from the top of Sutton Bank and have been up and down it many a time. Like someone said, I wouldn’t try it in the wet, problem is, it can be dry in Thirsk and snowing up here, seen that before.
I’ve turned artics round on Sutton Bank twice. Without police help.
The Helmsley TT (B1257 Helmsley-Stokesley) is a piece of ■■■■ in comparison. We always use it heading north.
Once got stuck going up sutton bank with a loaded artic tipper. Believe me it’s a complete Bugger to reverse back downwith cars constantly driving right up behind you. Managed to blind side into a small driveway at the bottom, which saved the 2 mile reverse. After that always went a different route to the feed mill!
That’s the only possible place to turn if I remember correctly.
Been down it plenty of times loaded and empty.
Went that way in the car a few years ago and two coaches met on the hairpin. That was interesting to watch!
only ever drove down it once,as i approached an ■■■■■■ vehicle appeared from nowhere and lead me down at (fast) walking pace.
has this happened to anyone else
i took a load of ready mix to a farm near the bottom of chimney bank, that was interesting, if i remember right you had to go through the pubs car park to get to the farm, also used to deliver the beer ect to the pub, white horse hotel or similar i think it was called, came down chimney bank one say in daf rigid which had tail lift, left a few scrapes in the tarmac, even had the suspension up full at back and it still scraped the ground…
Once by reversing into the little farm lane on the apex of the hairpin and once by reversing into the layby on the left a bit further down

Early 80s went up sutton bank with a 111 scania loaded with 20 tonne of bricks and made it,But talking of steep hills i did try to go up Seberham from j41 m6 to silloth late70s with an old ERF and couldn’t make it,it just run out of power.
I done Sutton Bank a couple of times in an artic loaded with ash blocks. Just took it steady!
Anyone loaded bricks out of Hansons at Accrington, then turned right out of the gates attempting Whinney Hill? Now that is a monster. Tried it once, and couldn’t get speed/traction right for toffee! Admittedly, I was in a battered old FL10 with a 360 (yeah right) engine at 44 ton! That was not a good day.
