Thanks for all the wishes folks, sadly I had to cancel my trip to the US, but I’m back home now after falling down my daughters stairs, I only slipped of the bottom one but landed badly hitting my back on the corner of the last step, did a few ribs in and some damage inside which now hurts more than the ribs, had 4 days in ICU on morphine and oxygen etc, and 5 days in recovery, so thanks to everyone for the wishes and Frank Robson for his visit in the hospital and the call from Alan Bennet and Les Mullin, I spent the next week at my brother’s in Cottingley and the last 3 days at my daughters in Skipton but am now back home recovering but still hurting and slowly getting better by the day.
One thing we learn when we get old, it hurts more, and takes longer to recover, so the lesson here is not to fall down steps when your 75 years old, because recovery is a longer process and hurts more, one thing that turned out well was I lost almost a stone in weight in the past 2 weeks, and after calling the travel insurance company had my air fare returned except for the £50 excess, and managed to get my rooms canceled for the racing in Valdosta Georgia, so in all it cost me £50 along with the pain of falling teaching me a lesson not to do it again, once again thanks guy’s and hopefully will have another reunion next year and see you all once again. Jack.
Hi Jack. Its good to hear that you are on the mend and back at home,i thought you might have stayed with Joanne for a little longer. Anyway since you are at home take it easy and don’t try and do too much.
I wish you a speedy recovery and good health. Alan

Hiya,
Nice to see your’e back home Jack, but all the hassle of cancelling your breakaway
was a shocker knowing it was not a package and would take quite a bit of phoning
to be able to cancel everything, and can I give you a bit of advice being able to
give you a few years get yourself a tent and pitch it in the middle of a nice flat bit
of land away from steps and stairs, you won’t be comfortable but you’ll be safe get
back to fitness as sharp as you can mate, regards Harry.

Thanks Harry, it is nice to be home, but will be taking things easy for a few weeks until I’m fit enough to fly once again, then away I’ll be going, the only thing I’ll miss is the racing because it is the finals of the Man-Cup drag-racing with all the top guy’s there along with many friends who folks like me only see them once a year, they are like drivers were all good friends who help one-another when needed, but recovering my air fair was the easy part, it took all of 15 minuets on the phone, and the hotel was even easier than that, in fact they were glad of the extra rooms because it’s a very busy time for them, when it’s usually full of the guy’s racing teams etc, one thing for sure, it taught me to take it easy and slow down and not fall down “any steps” any more at my age. :- Kind Regards :-Jack.
Now then Jack, you must be careful when you have your money belt on full of Dollars! Hope you are over the worst. Watched a really good TV programme the other night, its on National Geographic on Wednesday evening at 5pm its called ice road rescue and its set in Norway about state of the art Wreckers in very bad weather conditions rescuing drivers from potential life or death situations
maxhagar:
Go.od afternoon Gentle men and Les Pullen, last weekend as usual I went to the car boot sale where I was lucky enough to buy five books regarding road haulage, one book was lorries illustrated views from the north,it had a small piece about A one, there is a photo of an eight wheeler,B.W Homan of Ormesby Middlesborough who ran a fleet of AECs in orange livery who were taken over by A one. Any one who could elaborate on this? Also in British lorries of the 60s on page 86 there is a picture of an eight wheeler Scammell in Chapmans livery with the reg KJM 963. Behind the scammell is a Ford also belonging to Chapmans but the view is blocked. On page 23 there is strange picture ! a Harold Wood Bedford TK with a tanker on the back.
Hi Max,regarding Ben Homan from Middlesbrough,i remember them well they were just round the corner from us,and yes they ran mainly AECs though to be honest I recall them being a brown colour with red chassis and mudguards, had a bit of a reputation then, but,it all fairness a lot did back then, the auld fella always seemed ok,but then again I didn’t work for him.
Regards,Joeshell

Thanks once again Harry, I’m on the mend now and feeling better by the day, my doc said it’s OK to fly so I’m booking a flight to be there for Christmas and New year, the only sick part of it my insurance has gone up £177-69 to cover me for the extra days, because they only cover for 31 days per trip and I’ll be gone for 41 days, I think we should be in the insurance job instead of transport, £177-69 for 10 extra days is easy money for them rich bar-stuards sat in there cozy offices, thinking I’ve been going there for over 20 years and never had a claim until this fall a few weeks ago, it’s easy money for them. :- Jack.

Hiya,
I know what you mean about travel insurance Jack, myself rapidly approaching
80 and being a “cancer thingy patient” a quote for me is more than the cost of
the holiday, so having no need to go overseas anymore, I just do Britain by bus
now and am re-acquainting myself with all the places where I used to overnight
but never really got to see and am quite happy knowing I’m not fattening the
wallets of the insurance company bosses, keep well mate.
thanks harry, long retired.

I know what you mean Harry, I had cancer 20 years ago when I was working at A1, but after 5 years free from cancer and having no treatment after so long, the insurance companies cover you again, but I had a stroke 6 / 7 years ago and that’s the one they wont let go of, although I had the surgery to clean my coroted artery out in my neck they wont dismiss that because I still take the pills etc blood thinners and other stuff and apart from “falling down steps” I’m ok now, also I’m insured with Barclays travel pack and they now cover up to 80 years old, but because I’m still going in a couple of weeks time for Christmas & New Year which takes me over the 31 days limit per trip, I am having to pay an extra £177-69 to cover me for 41 days, I could do with winning the lottery this weekend just in case they put the price up before I go. As I said were in the wrong business, should have been in insurance instead. Kind Regards :-Jack.
Bloody travel insurance for old folk is a total rip off. Even if you’re reasonably fit if you’re over 75 they view you as though you’ve got the plague. I tried to renew our annual multi journey travel insurance Hell, I nearly died from shock when they said what the premium would be… Bar stewards.
you have a good holiday jack, glad you are ok,going myself this weekend, but only to the lakes for a week, better than nowt, look of the weather most of the time will be in the pub keith
