Well Kieth 2, it looks like interest in A1 have run out of steam, no-one is looking at it any more except for yourself and sometimes me, no-one has replied to have another reunion or any interest since last year, which is a shame but may-be it’s time for a rest for a while, but I see you’ve started a Leeds page which is having some response, so good luck for now to you and thanks for all your support in the past, I will be looking from time to time to hope-fully see if A1 drivers have decided to re-new there interest, and if they do I’ll try organising another get-together in the future, so keep up the good work you’ve done in the past for all drivers in our area, and I hope you got all your problems sorted out at home since the thieving scum-bags messed up your life, and hope it’s all settled down and living life to the full again for yourself and your wife.

Hi Jack, yes I think you are right,no one seems to come on any more

Hi Kieth thanks for your reply, it was good for a few years but interest has dropped off, I think it is an idea to give it a miss this year and see how much responce we get, providing some-one finds time to look on the site, Dont worry about your daughter joining the force, I have a couple in my family, one has been in since leaving school and her brother has been in since leaving the army a few years ago and he’s now a sargent in the police force in Catterick, but in reality it’s only a uniform and regarding taxing your car I thought you was always an honnest man, but leaving the car at home these days is a normal thing, because the country is paranoied since the bag was introduced and in our job you cant afford to loose your licence, give my regards to her in her future and hope she enjoys the job, and if she looks like a model she wont have to arrest them they will be giving themselves up instead. Regards :-Jack

RUA 982 R was in the Harrogate show that year, the paint job was special with a varnish coat to finnish off, even the chassis was varnished, that’s why it kept it’s sheen for all those years, it had a P reg number first then registered it when it came back when I took it over, but our great heavy haulage man had his hands on it first and took out the second bunk, that’s why it had my home made bunk from home with a spring matress.
Driving an Atki took a special driver, you needed a rubber back-bone, rubber legs and rubber arms whith the tyres blown up to almost 200lb to give you some chance of steering the damnd thing, none of that luxury stuff they call POWER STEERING, in those days, but the same one in the picture I also took it to Elvington when I was racing there, they had a truck show on but I was too bussy trying to break the sound barrier on my bike, so didnt get any prizes but it did look good, but driving it back brought memories back on how rough and heavy they were to drive, and was lucky and happy to get back in my Volvo, Ah! the luxury of it. :-Jack

I dont know who took it over after I got an F10, I had it for about 3 years and was sorry to part with it, it was such a good motor didnt give much trouble and In cant remember any big problems with the engine, the only thing I can remember was when the cable broke on the accelerator, it was only a single wire instead of the multi-strand cable’s we have today, it broke going through Tatabana on my way to Budapest, and I got a lad in a garage to fix because I had nothing to repair it and get me home, but it broke again as I set off, because the heat had hardened the wire where he welded it to the ■■■■■■, but second time it was ok and got me home, but the young lad was so embarrased because it broke he didnt charge me, but that’s the difference between then and today, DIY in lorries by drivers is a long gone pass-time and now it’s cost’s a fortune, I dont know how much they pay to get a tyre fitter out today, but it must have been cheeper to do it yourself and get the tyre fixed back home, because it dont take much brain-power to change a wheel. :-Jack
Sorry there was another minnor thing that went while I was away, it was a spring on the overdrive lever, it broke, so I fixed it with a rubber band to get me home, I remember going to XRoads for a new spring, but they wouldnt let me have a spring which would have been about 10p, they told me I’d have to take the whole swich, which probobly cost about £40/50, so I told them to stuff it and used rubber bands instead, I know it’s not my money and may-be I’m just a tight ■■■■■■■ when it comes to money but it’s the principle of if, why pay £50 when you can get away with 10p to do the same job, but that’s moddern trucking today isnt it. :-Jack

Your right there Kieth, it was when JMR was in the driving seat, I remember him commenting on the overdrive spring when I told him that they wanted me to buy the whole switch instead of a 10p spring, and he said f++k them you did right, I think a bag of rubber bands were about 25p at the time, and you got about 50 just in case another broke, I’m glad you didnt get started talking about Magee, the thought of his name makes me depressed, and at my age I dont need depression I need cheering up. :- Jack.

Hi Jeffrey, the picture of the F88 in Dover must have been taken in the late 1970’s early 80’s because the F88 were one there way out of the continent and the first F10’s were comming in to replace them, I remember some of the UK lads were almost fighting between themselves to get there hands on the F88’s as they came off the continent, but I still dont know who got hold of mine. :- Jack.
