How about ‘Warricks’ and Chains, which was once a staple requirement of the general haulage drivers equipment.

How did the Eurostar stand up to the middle East run? I guess the roads are a tad better than in the 70s. [emoji1]

The Eurostar stood up surprisingly well on Middle-East work, Johnny. Thing is, the build-quality of anything attached to the chassis and the cab itself were crap; but the chassis, 14-litre Fiat/Iveco lump and Eaton Twin-splitter formed a formidable base. I did several years on North Africa and a bit of Middle East with that unit, not to mention some serious Euro work. It was a good truck. Robert

Wow that picture takes me right back to my heavy haulage days,I use to tie a small rope around the handle to stop it opening up,I think one of them had a slightly bent handle,so that when to load/trailer flexed, the handle used to fly open, leaving the chain slack,it’s amazing what a picture can do to bring back long gone memories, thanks Frankydobo.

Should be under D or E for dangerous evil things. While the ratchet opposing screw type should have been made mandatory long ago.It took a visit to casualty with what could have been a very serious head injury caused by releasing one of those zb’s,for my guvnor to chuck the things in the skip where they belonged and replace them with the ratchet type.

Ward Dalesman.1980-1984.Ward Brothers,Lepton,Huddersfield,West Yorkshire, are operators of motorcoaches and road haulage lorries, and started manufacturing their own marque of motorcoach and bus chassis in 1980.A total of 18 chassis were made altogether:-
12 motorcoaches and 6 buses, and the designs of the motorcoach models,1 C11-640 and 11 C12-640’s,were based on the Seddon Pennine Motorcoach model. The 6 buses were rear-horizontal Gardner diesel-engined,Wadham Stringer B46D-bodied,single decker buses, designated GRXI,built for Darlington Transport in 1983.Production stopped in 1984.
However, two of the Ward Brothers, plus the managing director,Steven Ives,of Huddersfield motorcoach operator,Abbeyways,in 1984 began another motorcoach chassis building business: AEC !
- Albion Equipment Company !
Leyland, who owned the rights to these two marque names, objected!
So the company changed it’s name to ACE - Advanced Chassis Engineering …but it was still close to the AEC marque name…
ACE was in business from 1984 to 1991,two Couger V single decker buses were built, nine Puma IV motorcoaches were built, one Puma III motorcoach was built and one Cheetah motorcoach was built - 13 chassis in all.

War Department and War Office of Great Britain & the United Kingdom. 1857 to 1964 - both names and organizations were replaced by the Ministry Of Defence - MOD in 1964.The War Department - WD - operated within the War Office - WO - and looked after the transport side of the British Military.
We now go back to 1914 to the First World War,1914-1918,and take a brief look at the rich history of a particular Heavy Haulage Steam Road Locomotive :-
Fowler B6 Super Lion C 3 8 NHP Heavy Haulage Steam Road Locomotive,Engine No.14115,XC 9653,LAFAYETTE/THE LION.London,December 1914.New to British War Department-War Office,Wilts Sect 2 WD X 175 :-
LAFAYETTE/THE LION was mainly operated in France by the British WD-WO during WW1,it was sold into Civvy Street in 1921,was bought and operated by The London & Kentish Traction Haulage Company,London, which later became part of Pickfords Heavy Haulage, who sold this
road locomotive to Walter Denton Heavy Haulage,Manchester,in 1932. LAFAYETTE/THE LION then worked until 1946,then was stored and sold for preservation in 1974,but it wasn’t restored until 1995.It was painted in WD livery and given the very attractive French name,LAFAYETTE.
Unfortunately, both colour and black & white photographs of LAFAYETTE in restored War Department form are apparently rare, both on the Internet and elsewhere, but there’s plenty of photographs of the Corgi 1.50 scale model of it in their Vintage Glory Scale Models
of Steam Road Vehicles series of model steam road locomotives!
Fowler B6 Super Lion C 3 8 NHP Heavy Haulage Steam Road Locomotive,Engine No.14115,XC 9653,LAFAYETTE/THE LION.Served mainly in France for the WD-WO in WW1.Corgi 80109 1.50 scale model of LAFAYETTE.Hattons :-
LAFAYETTE was eventually painted in Pickfords Heavy Haulage livery, and it’s wonderful LAFAYETTE name was replaced by the uninspired The Lion name . Preston Steam Services are currently trying to sell the magnificent LAFAYETTE/THE LION for £400,000 +…
If I were rolling in money I would buy it,convert it to oil-firing,buy two brand new Volvo FH16 and Scania S730 6x6 Tractive Unit-Lowloader Artics to transport it to steam and vintage vehicle rallies and re-name it LAFAYETTE!
I would use the Scania and the Volvo
alternatively And yes, they would be six-wheel-drive
LAFAYETTE is equipped with a Stones Turbo Steam Turbine Electricity Generator Set for electric lighting. Many steam road locomotives and other steam road vehicles were equipped with these generator sets.

Walter.USA. The Walter Motor Truck Company was in business from 1909 to 1997,based in the Empire State of New York,USA.Walter built specialist motor vehicles:-Snow Plough-Plow - Snow Fighter - Snow Blower vehicles,4x4 Tractive Unit-Artics,Fire Engines and other specialist
motor vehicles. Walter definitely made some of my SRIBSMVS
Walter Four-Point-Positive-Drive 4x4 With 100% Traction System.
Walter snow-ploughs,and other models, employed the Walter Four-Point-Positive-Drive 4x4 With 100% Traction System, which basically consisted of undriven front and rear drop-forged solid straight axles, which gave a high ground clearance because the axles were undriven
and had no central differential housings. On the insides of each front and rear road wheel was an enclosed large internal gear ring which were an integral part of the wheel hubs. The engine drove through a gearbox-combined central differential, front differential for the front wheels,
transfer case and a propeller shaft drove the rear differential unit and drive shafts from these front, central and rear differential units were routed above the axles to the internal gear rings. The ends of these drive shafts had a pinion gear which meshed and engaged with the gear rings. The ends of the front drive shafts had constant velocity joints to provide steering of the front wheels, but some Walter’s,besides having this drive system, also had four-wheel steering!
So the whole of the double reduction drive system had a high ground clearance, which was very useful for snow-ploughing and off-road traction
Walter also built some six-wheel-drive motor vehicles that had this drive system.
Walter Snow-Fighter -Snow-Plow-Plough,Hopper-Bodied,4x4 Motor Truck.One of my SRIBSMVS :-
White.White Motor Company,Cleveland,Ohio,USA. Was once one of the big marque - names in the North American Commercial Vehicle Industry - Motor Truck Industry. Founded in 1901,White went bankrupt in 1980,was taken over by Volvo in 1981 and the White
marque name was phased out in 1997,that had by then had become the Volvo-White-GMC marque. Volvo dropped this marque name and sold it’s American-built motor trucks under the Volvo and Autocar marque names.
NOTE 1:Freightliner sold and serviced it’s motor trucks via the nationwide White sales and service organization from 1951 to 1977 under the White Freightliner marque name. After which Freightliner has had it’s own independent sales and service organization ever since.
White still had it’s own motor truck, motorcoach and bus range before, during and after the White Freightliner agreement.
NOTE 2:Autocar was founded in 1897 and I am very pleased to say that Autocar is still active as a specialist motor truck producer!
It was taken over by White in 1953,survived the Volvo take over of White and was sold to Grand Vehicle Works Holdings - GVW Group, LLC in 2001.
One of the most famous White motor trucks is this lorry :-
White WA 20 Super Power Conventional-Bonneted,6x4-4,Tanker-Bodied,Articulated Motor Truck-Lorry,1945,in the great and exciting White Heat film of 1949.James Cagney,Virginia Mayo,Edmond O’Brian starred :-
Famous James Cagney - Cody Jarrett QUOTE: ‘Made it Ma.Top of the world! ’ UNQUOTE.
Another, and possibly even more famous, motor truck is the magnificent White Freightliner WF-64 Bubblenose Drawbar Tanker Trailer Motor Truck in the even more great and exciting feature running-man-spy-film,North By Northwest :-
White Freightliner WF-64 Bubblenose COE,Diesel-Engined,6x4 Drawbar Trailer Tanker Motor Truck,1951.North By Northwest,1959,Cary Grant,Eva Marie Saint.James Mason. Alfred Hitchcock directed :-
Brilliant and wonderful symbolism : So at the end of this great film,Cary Grant - Roger Thornhill and Eva Marie Saint - Eve Kendall begin their Honeymoon in their sleeping compartment of the luxurious 20th Century Limited Sleeper Night Train.Roger gives Eve a helping hand onto the
upper sleeping berth, the train blows it’s multi-toned air horn as it enters into a tunnel
