Continuing our journey through the alphabet we arrive at N

Nationalisation

The elected Labour Government of !945 enacted laws nationalising all forms of transport. The Road Haulage Executive was formed for controlling hire and reward transport. W.A. & A.G. Spiers of Melksham was taken into state ownership in July 1949, after negotiations to achieve a better price for the business than the standard terms first offered. Started in 1931 with one lorry by brothers Bill and Albert Spiers they had grown the fleet to 19 by 1949, mainly Albions with a smattering of Bedfords. The brothers employed 32 staff and to mark the occasion the fleet and staff posed for these evocative and memorable photos. Spiers would rise again in 1954.

Newbould’s Bakeries of Bradford,Sheffield and Hull, bought flour on ex-mill terms and collected it with their own transport.

Nelstrops of Stockport, old established flour millers, still in business. This venerable AEC worked for 20 years for them and was re-cabbed three times.

Question “GF” have you any idea what make of axle that Seddon 32/4 would have had ? I have never seen anything other than Seddon’s own HR axle fitted to the 32/4. Interesting ! we could have set another “hare” running here along the lines of “The Big J 8LXB” search ! :open_mouth: :unamused:  Cheers Dennis.

Well Dennis I’ve dug out the original photo and had the magnifying glass on it, and I still can’t make it out properly. That hub looks vaguely continental, Mercedes or Deutz even. That L reg. coincides with the time that Seddon had a collaboration with Deutz, so that’s a possibility. We’ll put it into M, Mystery Axle.

Could it have been an Eaton axle possibly, but again I don’t recall Seddon using this axle on their 32/4’s, but thinking about it the Eaton may have been an improvement on their poxy Group Axle ! although I must say we had no problems with the Seddon axle on the 180 LXB engine motors we ran and, neither did we have any probs. with the group axle behind the sole 220 Cu 32/4 we ran. Now as far as the 8LXB’s went OMG, they did cause us grief as the hub reductions failed regularly at circa 70,000 miles which didn’t take long when they were double shifted. This weakness put me off buying any more Sed/Atks after 1977. Cheers Dennis.

I did wonder if it was an Eaton axle when I had the magnifying glass on the photo, but the half shaft end appears to be completely flat, whereas IIRC Eaton half shaft ends were slightly convex.

Hiya Sherlock, sorry “GF” ! You may well be right in your “deduction” as Seddons did have a penchant for trying “odd ball” components over the years, nothing wrong with that although they did promote that poxy HR drive axle which I could never understand why it was ever rated at 13 ton on mainland Europe ! But as the saying go’s customers can choose to vote with their feet and “cheque books” and we all know what happened to SEd/Atk :frowning: Cheers Dennis.
