A new low?

I had a phone chat with someone from DHL HR today about a local C+E job that was advertised on the company website. Delivering Sleepeeze beds and mattresses (handball).
The job description (below) was highly misleading, and the basic salary insulting.
I’d initially thought that it was a class 2 job that was mis-advertised which would explain the salary difference, but it wasn’t and was being sold with the expectation including night out money, bonuses, etc to make it look more attractive

Driver Class 1 (job ref: 34047)

  • Salary: £39,000 - £42,000 OTE

  • Region: Sheffield

  • Contract Type: Permanent

  • Total number of weekly/annual hours: 40

Pay Rate: £39,000 - £42,000 OTE
(Basic Salary - £28, 561.96) :rage:

  • Overtime payment after 8 hours + night out payment + additional monthly target bonus)
    Grade: RCS P
    Contract Type: Permanent (Full-Time)
    Shift patterns: Monday - Friday 04:00am - 07:00am starts
    Location: Sheffield

DHL, an award-winning leading supply chain business is seeking a Class 1 driver to play a vital role in our distribution service.

WHAT DOES THE ROLE ENTAIL?

As part of your normal duties, whilst maintaining excellent health and safety practices, you will:

  • Delivery of beds and mattresses to retail stores and warehouses using tail lift trailer
  • Manual handling required
  • Multidrop delivery - normally up to 8 drops per shift
  • 2 to 3 nights out per week are required

Not drops to houses and bocks of flats etc then?
Mattresses and beds would break no-one’s (Whoops! Almost no-one’s) back, dragging them to the tail-lift for the warehouse staff to catch them.

Could be a misleading advert? Could be a cushy number?

I dunno, some good quality queen size mattresses can be damn heavy.

When I were a lad…we’d shift half a dozen Queens before breakfast…

…just ask @robroy about the drama that caused!

Basic maybe ■■■■■, but if they take new passes its a start to gain experience. Besides I see loads of class 1 tramping advertised for that OTE ammount. So really what’s the difference??

Adverts are usually written by office staff that have no clue about what the job really entails.

It may be worth asking for clarification about what the job really is and is not.
And like all (most) jobs, it will suit some, and not others.

Worth a punt for a physically fit ex-solicitor?

I did a simular role about 4 drops a shift all you had to do was slide the matress to the end of the trailer if you were allowed in the warehouse. Only issue was hanging around waiting for the matresses to be maid

I did a stint doing bed deliveries pulling Silentnight group trailers with my own unit for a while…a long time ago.

The 5’ top range premium mattresses were bloody awkward and heavy, there was a knack involved of carrying them over your shoulder, if you did not get it right, you ended up flat on your arse with it on top of you…the drawer bases also, but they were split in 2.

I was a young big fit lad , so I managed ok carrying them up flights of stairs in houses, bed shops and hotels.

My son in law drives for them now, he tells me all they do now is push the units to the back of the trailer for others to carry off…so a bloody site easier than when I did it.
The drivers were on top dollar at that time, time and half after 40 hours with a good base rate.
Today they are on same rate right through.

Did I see DHL mentioned?
It looks to me like they have took over the transport from in house, and generally f. ed it all up in terms of t.s and c.s,.as these type of ■■■■ s usually do.

The HR woman did explain some of the specifics.
However the Sheffield yard is just a rented (SNAP) parking spot next to the tower cranes that you pass on the tinsley viaduct, with the main operation down in Stroud. The actual interview would be over the phone, with a driving assessment and 3 days training down in Stroud (hotel?).
I did point out that the local £/hr rate for C+E is probably 20%-30% higher + N/O money + bonuses. I Also said that I initially thought it would be class 2 because of the job description and salary. But for her to quote the salary figures Inc N/O money etc made it sound fishy.
In comparison B&Q are advertising weds-Sun (03:00-05:00) shifts for £44K+ year.
The agency for the last job has messaged me saying that the company need 5x C+E drivers for nights/early mornings and said they’re paying £20/hr straight through

ATM I think I’ll stick with semi retirement, chilling on the sofa, going to rock gigs and plan for spending the summer in Portugal

For the classic rock fans among us, I have a couple of guest list tickets going spare for the Uriah Heep concert in Manchester Bridgewater Hall next Tuesday night

Uriah heep…
I thought they were all dead apart from 1 ?

Yeah, a bit like us truck drivers, old and nearing extinction
Uriah Heep are doing a “farewell tour “ and I happened to blag a couple of free tickets in a radio station competition

If you mean strood. Its an easy job. I think the shefield guy just used to do trailer swaps and drive between strood shefield and glasgow

Enjoy the gig mate.:+1:

I saw Uriah Heep live in Leeds last year. On the card with Saxon and Judas Priest.
Good night out.

I too was at the Leeds gig, unfortunately I was sat on the far right side of the stage so didn’t get the best seats. Although I did enjoy UH over the rest of the show
