A different Magnum?

I just come down the M1 past Toddington, and pulling out of the services northbound was a Magnum tractor unit. Nothing rare in that, you could say, but this one was an 8 legger with a largepod behind the cab (like a heavy haulage tractor has for additional cooling etc), and pulling a trombone low loader trailer with a steel fabrication on it.

Do any of our regular contributors know anything about it, who operates it etc?

Also are there any other Magnum 8 wheel tractors/ rigids about?

I look forward to comments

Ed

seen an 8 wheel DAF tractor unit pulling a normal triaxle flat trailer on the M6 today. Looked like a serious hi-ab crane on the back of the tractor unit. Obviously 8 wheeler to compensate for the weight of the hiab.

Yeah, a 100 ton-metre crane will weight around 7 tons. Hard to put that much weight on a 6x4 front axle.

Anyone know how much weight them dinky lift axles are good for? Type used on tankers?

Was it this one?

IIRC this didnt have a crane behind cab, so i guess it was a heavy haulage tractor.

Anyone know anything about it - is it a test wagon for one of the heavy hauliers?

Was it something like this (this is very odd. Cab moved forward and front steps):

That looks very much like it!

Is the picture one of the units used for the french nuclear prgramme moving fuel from Cherbourg to the ports?

That’s a Nicholas, which is a French trailer manufacturer that also builds the odd tractor unit

Hi all,
Is that a tractomas?years ago they made them with ford transcontinental cabs.
Regards Andrew.

Tractomas is the model name, Nicholas is the manufacturer, don’t know if that’s a Tractomass as that was on an overwidth chassis

I think tractomas use the premium type cab.
