90% on cpc mod 4 and failed

Danj

Every CPC Mod 4 test will include the following 2 questions. Below are both the questions and definative answers to both:-

LGV MOD 4
Section 4 - Ability to assess emergency situations
This question is on all 8 papers

(Q) Show me how you would enter the vehicle safely, and then show me all of the precautions you would take before starting the engine. b) You are now parked on the left on a busy main road. Please show me how you would leave your vehicle safely.

Open drivers door fully and use both grab rails to enter cab making sure that all steps are used (worth 5 marks)

Close door set seat position, set mirrors, check parking brake and gear lever (worth 5 marks)

Ensure that the vehicle is secure, stop engine and before opening door check all round for safety (worth 5 marks)

Turn round and use both grab rails making sure that all steps are used to exit the vehicle (worth 5 marks)

LGV MOD 4
Section 5 - Ability to prevent physical risk
This question is on all 8 papers

(Q)
From the driver’s seat and externally, show me and explain the daily safety check you would make to this vehicle before driving on the road

Brakes (pull forward slowly and apply the brakes)

Lights (turn on all lights inc rear fog light but ask examiner to confirm brake lights work )

Tyres (as per mod 3 vehicle safety question) except add checking for foreign objects getting stuck between rear twin tyres)

Wipers/washers (as per mod 3 question)

Horn (forget this and you deserve a retest)

Mirrors (see above)

Speedometer/Tachograph (explain that you would insert digi card or tacho disk. No need to expand)

Reflectors/number plates (say you would check they are clean and visible)

Exhaust systems start engine then get out. (the only time you leave the vehicle with engine runnng). Look for excessive smoke or noise

Speed limiter setting show 90km limiter sticker and confirm to examiner that the limiter has been checked

If you give the above answers you will get 20% on each question. Hope this helped

In the Module 4 test, there are five topic areas, within each topic area there are 4 questions. In each of those topic areas you have to score at least 75%, with an overall pass mark of 80% for the whole test. Therefore there is a total of 20 questions.

Assuming that an answer to a question is either right or wrong, each question must be worth 25% of the topic area, so by getting one question wrong in a topic area you would only score 75% of the mark in that topic area, which would be a pass for that topic area, and would be a drop of 5% of the total score for the test.

It would be possible to incorrectly answer one question from another three topic areas and still score the 80% overall mark to pass the test.

In conclusion, it is possible to get 4 questions wrong and still pass. To drop 10% overall (i.e. 90% correct), two answers must have been incorrect.

This is of course provided that my information gleaned from the DSA publications is correct.

I had a trainee who failed for selecting the wrong type of load restraint, and as this was question 2, he only scored 25% for that topic because question 3 was to show how the correct restraint was used and question 4 was how to remove the correct restraint, both of which he couldn’t do due to selecting the wrong restraint asked for at question 2 in the first place!

Sounds complicated your theory but the absolute reality of Mod 4 is that a candidate gets asked 5 questions.

Each question carries a max correct score of 20%

Examiners can score 5% 10% 15% or 20% for each question unless the candidate says “I have no idea of the answer” in which case he score 0% but there is nowhere on the sheet to put 0%

A Candidate must score 15% minimum for each of the 5 questions, but that is not enough . He must score 80% overall to pass.

There are 8 different test papers. You would think 8 papers X 5 questions = 40 possible questions but that is not the case.

There are only 20 possible questions. This is because some of the questions are repeated on several papers. Indeed 2 questions are asked on every paper ( see above post)

With regards to the Load Securing Demonstration Trolley there are 3 possible questions. I have taken over 20 candidates for this test and have never , NEVER had the trolley brought out.

Trouble is I have to teach those 3 questions just in case.

This is not a difficult test but it helps to know the possible questions in advance…

As I understand the way the test is marked you cannot possibly fail if you get 90%.

As the overall pass mark is 80%, and you have to achieve at least 75% in each topic, there is no way that by only deducting 10% anywhere you could have failed!

You must a minimum of 15 out of 20 in each subject area so 20x4=80+ 1x10 total 90% -constitutes a fail
Only guaranteed pass mark is 95%

Either your maths or mine are wrong - I’ll let you know!

Nothing wrong with anyones maths- thats how it works

It is the same principle as the ADI theory- you must score a minimum in each section- otherwise you can reach the pass mark but STILL FAIL-

danj:
sorry smart mart but i can assure you its correct you need a minimum of 15% per question. i wouldnt have to pay another £115 pound if it was not true thats not for the test it includes time of training company as well for 1 1/2 hours as nearest test centre in 30 mins away

Would it be possible for you to meet the instructor at the test centre for 30 mins when the truck is being used on another training course - the other trainee(s) could either take a break or have their day extended by 30 mins as well as seeing a mod 4 test :bulb:
If this is possible then that should keep the cost down.

Well I understand my explanation and don’t find it complicated, but it’s the same as yours anyway.

As regards the demonstration trolley, I have pretty well had the examiner use it for around 50% of tests, so I guess it’s just examiner preference - or luck/unluck on your part. Strangely if I have had two candidates on back to back module 4’s the examiner has used the trolley for one and not for the other. I assumed the DSA would ‘choose’ the set of questions, but maybe it’s the examiner, and some don’t like getting the trolley out!

As regards the question bank, I have been in ‘negotiation’ with the DSA to publish them, and after a refusal in December, I asked for an internal revue and have been promised an answer by today - I await with bated breath!

thankyou john thats a great help on those 2 questions but what are the possible 3 for the trolley

I know of two of the questions using the trolley, which are approximately as below:-

  1. You have delivered part of your load and are left with half a load of empty steel cages inside your box van.

Show me by pointing the area of the box you would distribute the load.

Show me by pointing to the correct restraining device you would use to secure your load.

Show me how you would secure the load with the restraining device.

Show me how you would remove the restraining device.

  1. You have a pallet of paper.

Show me by pointing the area of the box you would distribute the load.

Show me by pointing to the correct restraining device you would use to secure your load.

Show me how you would secure the load with the restraining device.

Show me how you would remove the restraining device.

Answer to 1 is using the load tensioning bar, answer 2 is a strap, or if you can tie a dolly knot, perhaps the rope.

At a guess the other question will be similar but for sheet steel, which will require the chains and chain tensioner - but I’m not sure of that.

It is a steel question - CLICKY

danj:
thankyou oh well at least i passed my driving test 1st time could be worse lol still its not the £55 that you have to pay its the time and fuel for the truck and the instructor i think this could be put as 1 test with your driving and the dsa could give you better revision material like the theory and hazard test both have good revision material.

ROG:
Hang on… some of that (£25 I think) is for the DQC so that part of it should not be paid twice !!

I’ve called the number in my signature below to confirm or deny this - should get answer tomorrow

Got an answer…

The £55 includes the issuing of the DQC but that is the FREE issuing of the DQC so the actual test & re-test fee remains the same

.

This does make sense to me on a financial footing as they can do two Dcpc mod 4 tests in the same time as one Mod 3 test - 2 X £55 or 1 X £115 in roughly the same time frame at the practical test centre.

Trainers are being allowed to exchange one mod 3 test for two back-to-back mod 4 tests.
