Old clip from Thames news from 1985 showing a police and ministry check in Deptford
A shorter version worth a watch for the response of the driver to the reporter.
Nothing changes with London tipper firms then
Never been a game for the feint hearted

I bet they’re paid by the load back then as well ?
That’s why so many got fly tipped lol
30 quid a day basic 10 quid a load and another 20 quid for everyone that went to your own tip if you know what I mean.

So £150 to £200 was easily obtainable a day if you knew the right spots Paddy
Also I bet the diesel had a red hue to it and the tyres were slicks
If you was greedy and brave lol
It’s not just london , when manchester airport was being extended , late 60s , the local owner drivers chose to drag over the cat and fiddle . There were loads tipped at the roadside for miles . Tip the last load and give the foreman a drink to sign all the day’s tickets . Everyone was happy , drivers made a good profit , foreman likewise , and i think on the qt the council were pleased with all the free stone for dealing with road subsidence .
When they was building the British library by kings cross station in the 80s. the machine driver was a compulsive gambler he would sign the ticket for the load he put on and another three for a fiver a ticket. Word soon got round and it was soon realised they had paid to move way more than had gone out.

I was hoping the cab door was going to fall off of that knackered old Routeman. It would have been interesting to hear their views on the cyclist issue.
The iris man at the end is my father his views on cyclists is rather negative.
And the late Alfie Buckingham who told him bollocking would no doubt say the same
Wow thanks for posting this its shaken me out of my lethargic state and got me thinking about “the good old days” when there was money to be earned (no FORS/CLOCS or bin wagon cab tippers/mixers) loved the old Maggie D, had the look of a Dan Ryan motor lol,I had a Scammell 30 tonner it had a better payload than the 32 ton FMX I drive in my part time job,you can take the driver out of the tipper but you can’t take the tipper out of the driver so we just keep going back for more! but no London work don’t need the aggro 2/3 days a week keeps me out of the pub & pays for holidays (off to Cape Verde next week)
The deutz and the two scammells belonged to Dan Ryans brother in law Jim Walsh.
Yeah much more fun times for sure.
My dad still does the odd day in a tipper now but is mainly on a machine in the yard now.
Funny how a few of the big London firms playing to tfls tune with All the crap going on got where they are by some of the dubious practives mentioned.

A lot of companies Nationwide got where they are now by carting ‘Ghost Loads’ on large construction projects as well!
Pete.

An Old Lad with a tipper on the M6 when it was being built in the 60’s pointed out to me a little Paddy banksman one day and said " see that little ■■■■ in the flat cap" he’ll sign anything for “half a bar” ( 10 bob note ) Mind you this was in '67 so what would that be worth to-day. Cheers Bewick.
25quid last time I bought one.
Don’t happen much now most big jobs you need tip ticket to get paid and times lorry’s come and go on and off site etc
