It’s a while since I initiated a new thread and I’ve been meaning to explore those old tilt trailers from the '60s (before the advent of 40-footers). Here are a few to kick off with. One immediately notices that even then, the distinctive styles of the French and the British tilts were established, and would continue right through to the 13.5m tilts of the '90s.

Belgian examples (with Bollekens AEC Mk5s attached!)
An East German Leyland and two Belgian examples (the last one has an Atkinson CLT on the front).

Great old photos Ro, very interesting. Always amazes me that the Europeans had sleeper cabs, converted or otherwise and yet here’s our brave lad doing his best in a day cabbed Scammel on TIR work potentially. We seem to have been at the mercy of the unions and tight fisted bosses? I wonder who invented the tilt and why so called?
Browsing and this one caught my eye!

Cheers Stew! The name ‘tilt’ was used to describe the horse-drawn wagon version of the same structure, so it probably originates in the mists of time. As for the day cabs; it ought to be borne in mind that several of the above will have been delivering unaccompanied trailers to Tilbury docks for shipment out to Antwerp. Just found another pic:

Well found ‘5thwheel’! I was looking for one like that earlier.

The AEC seemed a popular choice to go over the water in the ‘60’s by all accounts.

Yes indeed. The Mk 5 was very well thought of and there are still old drivers on here who believe they were one of the best lorries ever produced! Certainly, the 192 bhp powered version with the 6-speed Thornycroft 'box would have held its own on the Continent. The Belgians took it a step further with their LHD versions of it by fitting the Bollekens sleeper cab - just the job then! Ro
