More than that with a trailer there was no C1+E type category.
Also 38t with a class 3 or 2 again the trailer didn’t count.
It used too be you could drive a 7.5. tonner and a 16 seat mini bus (not at the same time) .I think that its not for hire or reward . Worth checking out .

Exactly. You just need CPC and tacho in addition to your pre 1997 car license for hire or reward
The Class 2 and 3 licence did allow for a trailer but when pulling a drawbar trailer the speed limit off the motorway network was 30 MPH.

The requirement for a second man was abolished:

but the speed limit remained until 1984/85:

You could drive a full size coach on a car license as long as you were not carrying fare paying passengers. Could you not?
In fact you could drive up to 8.5 on a car license and if you had 6 months of log sheets to prove you were given a class 3 on grandfather rights that covered you up to 10 ton.

From memory also a 7.5 tonner pulling a trailer on a car licence.Everything was based on the category of the prime mover only.

Class 3 was 32t 2 + 2 drawbar and 38t 2 + 3.
Also don’t remember any 1t trailer restriction on a 7.5 tonner. It was the gross plated train weight of the prime mover as many travellers made use of pulling large caravans with D series tippers empty or loaded in the day.

Licence not License.
I believe that the 7.5 tonnes gross came in because we had joined the Common Market in 1973 as it was then known. Prior to that it was 3 tons unladen weight. During 1974/5, as I recall, the change came into effect and a 12 tonnes gross was introduced.
At this time I was working for Hertz Truck Rental and on the day of the change I had in my fleet Bedford and Ford lorries, some were 7.5 tonnes gross and others, predominately Bedfords were under 3 tons unladen with gross weights up to around 8.5+ tons. Confusion reigned for a while trying to work out who was hiring which vehicles and what were their weights.
I had already passed my class 3 test by then so wasn’t affected by these changes.

You still can IF: the vehicle is over 30 years old on the day in question, it is not for hire and reward and only 8 passengers are carried.
When I started out I was under 21, so no HGV licence. Normally drove a 7.5T gross Ford. When that was off the road, the spare vehicle was an old HGV3 Ford, (ten stud wheels, etc) with the last couple of foot of bed hacked off, to get the ULW just under 3ton. Absolute beast, needed more strength to steer it than to load or deliver the coal!

I bought a coach in 2002 to take my driving test and then preserve it. It was 25 years old and I had held a class 3 licence since 1974 and a class 1 since 1979 but I coudn’t drive the coach without a qualified driver with me. I passed my test in 2003 and three years later it could be driven without a class D licence as stated above. Is there any logic to our laws?
