65 year old driver arrested, 2 dead

Sad news this morning.

It’s sad for everyone concerned, obviously we don’t know the details yet but even the lorry driver never started the day expecting to be involved in something like that :frowning:

I’m pleased to see that there’s been a clear message that media outlets should not approach the families of the deceased.

For the inevitable TN-CSI analysts out there, this link shows a picture of how the road looks in that area. If you don’t want to click the link, assuming he was travelling from the north, he’d have just left the dualled-carriageway part of the A19 and gone onto the single carriageway “York Road” part of the A19. It’s a very busy road during the week but, as you’d expect, far less busy around 9am on a Saturday morning.

More details emerging; as Zac says it was a single carriageway, I’ve just heard on the news that the police officer wasn’t on duty but actually stopped in her private car to assist a breakdown that she came upon.

We can argue for ever about things like driving at a speed that you can stop in for the distance that you can see, but I’m suspecting that the lorry driver suddenly rounded a bend to see this but had oncoming traffic and had to make an awful split second decision.

RIP to the lady involved.

As much as I understand why there might be an inclination to look for excuses for “one of our own”, there aren’t any bends on this stretch of road. Here is what it looks like when facing both eastwards towards York, and westwards towards Thirsk:

way to many unknown variables like weather and road conditions. as said above was there oncoming traffic and the lorry driver tried to put it on the verge… or did he swerve and lost control of the trailer Only people that know are the ones there.

There must be something adverse as two cars had just crashed

Weather was cold, dry, but bright, with excellent visibility

No: One car was stationary, said to have crashed earlier, the cop stopped “to help” (I’d imagine possibly looking to see if the car driver was “impaired” in some way), no second car was mentioned.

I think you’re confusing this with another A19 incident further north (around Castle Eden), where one vehicle crashed (left the carriageway and struck a tree), police stopped to assist, and while they were in attendance, a second car crashed adjacent to the first crash (left the carriageway also, this time hitting several lamposts).

Yesterday morning, she wasn’t on duty on a shift, she was off duty, and she came across the road traffic collision on the A19 and she stopped to help.

from that i assumed (maybe wrongly admittedly) that there had been a crash if your pics are of the section of road it happened on there is no street furniture so assumed 2 cars were involved.

i would of thought if it was only one car accident they could of pushed it out the road and she could of parked on the verge specially as she was in her own car (as she wasn’t on duty) and therefor no blue lights.

dont say not another weather alert from the met office that was wrong. Mind you the weather here today and for the last couple has been dry and sunny but the glare off the road because of the frost has been awful at one point this morning if i didnt know better i would of sworn blind that the road was green (and before anyone comments yes i was on the tarmac it was the refraction of the light)

An awful incident.

For those who didn’t bother reading the first two sentences of the BBC report:
"An off-duty police officer has died after she was struck by a lorry while helping at the scene of an earlier crash.

PC Rosie Prior, 45, had stopped to help Ryan Welford, 41, from Knaresborough, and was standing on the verge of the A19 at Bagby in North Yorkshire, when they were hit by a lorry at 08:55 GMT on Saturday."

Deepest condolences to the officer’s family and colleagues, I would think twice about stopping on a busy fast road without PPE and emergency lighting. No doubt everything will come out in the investigation. It’s 10 years next February that my friend and colleague was killed in duty on the M6 at Tebay. The time has flown by!
